Maritza The Vase Reef

Peace To All,

I am Maritza, The Vase Reef. In a few weeks, I will be 2 years old. There are 29 different types of Corals in this little space of water, ranging from SPS, LPS, and others. I originally started as an experiment to prove and disprove certain things in the Reef Keeping circle and Science.

Today, Maritza is part of our family.

Some people keep dead flowers in their Vases.

We keep Live Corals and Inverts in Ours.

Blessings To All.

It is beautiful what is the filtration and light set up for your fantastic vase

Peace Tess & Ellie,

Thanks for liking and commenting. As per filtrations and light, the filtration is simply Live Rocks and Live Sand, that's it.

Followed by a 12 Watt ABI Par38, 50/50 LED bulb, on for 9 hrs a day in the winter months, 10 hrs. in the warmer months. Maritza is almost 2 years old and has never been broken down for cleaning or other. We perform a 100% water change weekly, after we feed the corals and wait for 3 hrs before the change. We do use R.O. water and Instant Ocean Salt Mix. No dosing.

Here is a video on her Youtube Channel. Any questions, comments, feel free and ask away.

Hope this helps.

Blessings To All.

Where are the bubbles coming from

Peace.

The bubble are coming from a Whisper Air Pump with a control dial, a check valve, to prevent water from backing up into the pump, if ever a failure, air line tubing and suction cups That's it.

Thanks for the comment. I'm so glad that you've been inspired by Maritza The Vase Reef. Take your time, have patience, and do your homework on Vase Reef Keeping. They're not like larger set ups. Make sure that you get a jar that you can fit your hand in easily, and work around the set up for the maintenance and proper husbandry.

Cookie jars are nice and interesting but the covers are tricky because they will not close properly around the heater and tubing, and some covers are so thick and curvy that they will distort the penetrating light.

If any questions or comments, please let Me know, Patiently waiting for your introduction into Vase Reef Keeping.

Blessings To All..

That is a really beautiful tank, those are some stunning corals. What do you have in there for water flow? I have a large cookie jar (full of cookies) that I might turn into my next project.

Thank You. Maritza appreciates it. As per the water flow, it's only a Whisper Air Pump, Check Valve, to prevent water ever backing into the pump, Air Line Tubing, and Suction Cups, to hold the tubing against the glass.

The Whisper air pump has a dial to control the amount of air flow, which I keep 25% increase on the dial, for nice flow and a bouncing affect on the coral polyps. Since the cover fits snug onto the rim, very little evaporation take place, and I'm able to get 3-5 days without having to top off with R.O. water.

When it's time to top off, the Specific Gravity increases by .05 (1.025-1.025.5), and I drip the R.O. water at 1 drop per second, and I only increase the air flow 50% at this time, for a more even and rapid mixing, and top off until the marker on the side is covered. That tells me that the water in the vase is at 1.025.

New Video Coming shortly....

Hope this helps.

Blessings To All.

Peace To All,

This is a Question and Answer message, for those inquiring all over and messaging Me, which We appreciate.

Q: What is that Green Coral in the middle?

A: Psammocora Green Branching Coral

Q: Is that Purple Coralline Algae on front left wall in the vase?

A: No. It was a "presumed dead" by the LFS, Photosynthesis Sponge(Collospongia Auris), which was completely bleached, and was out the water for over an hour. When I picked it up, it was still slippery and shiny, so I put 2 pieces in the vase and within 30 days, it turned purple!!

Q: Why do I let so much Xenia grow all over?

A: It appears that the Xenia's are getting out of hand. However, each group is growing on it's stalk, making it easy for Me to frag whenever I want. I allowed it to grow on the glass because it's easier to collect for the LFS and friends.

Q:Do I dose the and how much?

A: I haven't yet. But I'm prepared to do so if needed. Water changes and feeding have kept Maritza happy and thriving.

Q: How do I remove the Coralline Algae?

A: Fortunate for us, We haven't experience the Coralline Algae growing all over the place. There are some spots in the vase and rocks but not so prolific that it's become a chore to remove. My reasoning is because, there are 29 different types of Corals in this vase, so they are using all of the available Calcium, Alk., and all the other trace elements so quickly, that the Coralline Algae can't really get a foot hold, to become as some will consider, a nuisance.

Q: Why did you change from Par30 LED to Par38 LED bulb?

A: The Par30 LED has 9 diodes, 6 White, 3 Blue, so the light out put was really like 10K light, which I had to cover some of the white diodes to get a more even balance color, and avoided the "bleaching on corals".

The Par38 ABI LED bulb is a 50/50 bulb with 6 Blues, 6 Whites, spread evenly on the bulb, for a more even color, without having to cover any diodes, and it's only 12W! The Par30 is 18W. Both are nice bulbs, but the ABI bulb is more use friendly and a nice light for both videos and pics.

Hope I've answered your questions. Please feel free to ask and comment. We appreciate this.

Happy Holidays To All..

Blessings To All..

greaaatttt stuff! do you happen to have a build document thread?

Peace.

Thanks for the comment. As per a "build documented on a thread", no. I'm not a blogger and just recently got into this forum to start. I do have a column on Instant Ocean's Expert column on Facebook, and it's has some of the details. I also have most of our videos on Maritza's Youtube channel.

But if you have other questions and comments, please ask. We appreciate this.

New video posted soon.

Blessings.

Peace To All,

Thanks for comment. The tubing is entering the vase through a little cut on the cover. If you look at the video you can see it's a tight fit, so it's sealed. It's just covered enough to prevent dust from entering, evaporation, salt creeps, and curious fingers, wanting to take a dab. Hope this helps.
