FYI, i did the same thing with an AI Vega. Never had any heat problems but I wasn't getting very good spread on the light. about 3 months ago I cut a hole the exact dimensions of the Vega and raised it up out of the hood. Better, but still not good enough spread. Going to convert the whole thing to a rimless some time over the next couple weeks. AI recommends getting the Vegas 12" off the water. :-O

I've got excellent coverage right now. I did order the new 120 degree lenses to get even better spread.

Is this an 8 gallon? Im looking to upgrade my lights on my biocube but have no idea where to start or look. Considering making a new mount and taking off the hood completely.
