uglybuckling Posted October 31, 2012 I've seen diatoms make "brown hair" as well. I can't tell from the picture what kind of algae this is, exactly, but the usual things to get rid of algae apply. These are in no particular order: 1) lower nutrients using chaeto, a skimmer, phosguard, GFO, sugar, vodka, whatever. 2) black out the lights for a couple days, depending on what corals you have in the tank and what you can get away with. 3) clean-up crew; buy one from Reefcleaners or anywhere else. But mostly Reefcleaners. 4) Water changes using water that you KNOW has no nutrients in it. 5) Hand removal; washing rocks, etc. Quote Link to comment
kush. Posted October 31, 2012 are u sure this is a brown hair algae? It looks somewhat similar to a slime algae problem i had. A really easy solution was to get a tooth brush and brush the rocks as they are in the tank. After that let your filter polish the water and clean your filter. Quote Link to comment
ripcurl090585 Posted October 31, 2012 thanks for the info.. i just cleaned my rocks with a soft brush and cleaned my filter and added new chemi pure elite so hopefully that will solve it.. if not the tanks going dark for 2 days Quote Link to comment
