check out the U-tube, you can get it at most LFS. PVC male adapter and female adapter, plus a gasket and optional elbow create a bulkhead.

I work at a LFS. We got those U-tubes. I've never seen them used? Do you just start a siphon with them? The overflow box drains into a sump/refugium?
