akbuuur Posted January 3, 2007 u know theres this stuff, pond netting thats black and very thin, get a couple layers of that and it will be good with lighting as well as keeping the fish in.... right now its out of season but you should look into that from specialty pond stores Quote Link to comment
pheallox Posted January 3, 2007 Nice idea I would paint it black but thats just me Quote Link to comment
StanD Posted January 3, 2007 yep. i agree i painted my egg crate with flat black to minimize the metal halide reflection. Quote Link to comment
travisurfer Posted January 3, 2007 you can use krylon fusion. you should see my lighting setup, its so much worse than yours but it gets the job done Quote Link to comment

ezramore Posted January 3, 2007 great stuff. i am using some of it as a cooling rack for my xbox and another piece for a rack to set my MH ballasts on. wired a couple of computer fans and bam. instant cooling rack. The only thing i see is that they will rust when exposed to salt. I put a coat of anti rust primer every were it was cut and it seamed to help. do you have to take the whole thing off for tank maintanence or is it hinged someware? Quote Link to comment
tippeframe Posted January 3, 2007 It's not hinged anywhere. Most of my maintenance is done in the sump anyways and I have a magnetic algae cleaner. I don't have to worry about rust because it is 100% plastic egg crating. I really didn't plan it out-it just sort of evolved when I made it. I originally was just going to lay the lights directly on the crate but I lost a lot of light that way. I can see how you can use this stuff for anything. I'm going to use some left over for a frag rack in sump and I'll get another light in the sump just for frags. Quote Link to comment
ezramore Posted January 3, 2007 i am using the metal shelving ones. Thought thats what these were. I must learn to read someday. Quote Link to comment
Alicia Marie Posted February 23, 2007 I have a "?" for you. Why don't you build an easy little wooden frame to hide the front and sides, and leave the back and top open, just to make it look a little more finished. I love the idea though. Truly ingenious . Quote Link to comment
gotboost15psi Posted June 21, 2008 laugh!?!?? Thats brilliant...Looks clean and well planned. Painting it black would allow it to blend in with everything else. Quote Link to comment
