jm82792
Well it's a week old,I found 2 pieces of LR on the beach(yay legal) the surf was responsible not me I picked up 3 nerites,2 hermits and that's about it It gets some sun nothing direct so I put it out on the rail(direct sun) and I'm getting bubbles from the coralline. So I guess 4 hours of the day will have no air pump and use the algae bubbles(no diatoms the nerites are machines) I had a tiny cycle everything was fine and I did a 50% water change .... I plan on putting it into a 3 gallon since I want more stability and more options(goby!) I am flying by the seat of my pants on where to live we will in the end live in a sunny area but I could live for a month or so in a cloudy dank area. So if that is the case I'll do some Cree LEDS to keep it running till we move to the sun again. 0 Ammonia 0 Nitrites 5 Nitrates PH 8.4 SG of 1.26 Temp of ????(74-78 outside of the pico never strays from that may hit 84) The Pico: Eggs from nerites: Link to comment
tinyreef
did you rinse the pickle smell out? i'm using my pickle jar as my kalk reactor. good luck with your jar/tank! Link to comment
showjyr
Your PH is way, way low. Link to comment
jm82792
Lol 8.4 Whoops! I'm using seawater so yea I don't know how stuff wouldlive in that. Hopefully this will look cooler soon with the Cree lighting when I get it all intergrated along with a "remote"(box holds eltier cold water is pumped to) tec cooler. I'll be adding more stuff sooner than later. Link to comment
JonathanS
I will be watching, check out my thread. Link to comment
jm82792
Well an update, not much but it's something. The pico on the right is cycled and my free nerites that I find are hard at work. The one on the left is maturing more it was started the start of this month. There is some growing macro, less diatoms and overall it's getting better. My plan is to add a goby. I spent 45 minutes trying to catch one in a 1 foot by one foot by 4 inch deep tide pool no luck, but I will bring some tubing and "suck" one from it's hole that it will dart into and not swallow him I'm almost sure they eat algae since I see many in even smaller tide pools, they are kept alive by lots of rain topoffs and not by the ocean's tide. Ps. The tank looks way better in person Some pics of my tiny once big carnivorous plant collection. I'll get back into the hobby.... When we own a house. Link to comment
tinyreef
ok, i don't feel so bad about my stand now. are you topping off with rainwater just letting it sit? or do you collect it and then top off as needed via measurements? it looks like they just sit outside but i'd think they'd either overflow/flood or not get enough, depending on the weather. jm82792
They have a plastic top(coral skeletons and plastic bags) to them but I just topoff with RO. The stand is temporary The tanks are just sitting out on the lani, along with my plants. I'm going to redo(wasn't happy with it) my 12 inch cubed then they will be transferred to that. But for now i'm just seeing what happens with these things. I haven't changed the water much like every week and have perfect parameters I will be moving to a dark rainy part of hawaii so the tank's contents have to be transferred. Link to comment
SmittyCoco
Nice set up. How is living in Hawaii? P.s. Thanks for the Rick roll Tiny ! Link to comment
jm82792
It is nice I have my peeves,No LPS,SPS,Clams(maybe probobly no clams) and all softies(but zoas and palys) But it is a trade off. I hate that you need a big tank to make the same wow appeal as a smaller tank with tons of coral and a fish. Link to comment
jm82792
Here is the newest tank inhabitant that I've had for a month. So I've seen them in small tide pools(1 gallon to 10 to thousands),the adults get 8 inches long so obviously I'll let him go and/or get him into my dream 55. Otherwise it's the same old thing, other than Coraline is spotting the glass. I'm working on my 7 gallon cubed I've siliconed it but am still struggling to get my equipment. It'll have a 70 watt DIY MH light,I can only keep softies but people keep telling me that the color is much better under MH. Since I'm in Hawaii it's hard to get everything I need. Link to comment
jmigchelbrink
Did you find that fish in a tide pool? That would be rad Link to comment
jm82792
Yep I got him from a tiny tidepool with a net. I'll take some pics at a large tidepool since there are seacukes (foot long even bigger),I saw a foot (end to end) or so brittle star(blenny eaters ?), baby tangs(not many) and other random things. Off the coast there are tons of fish there, many of them are small nano fish but there are inverts. And some weird awesome SPS,CRAP! I wish they were legal to keep here Link to comment
jmigchelbrink
Haha it's probably about as legal as keeping fish you find Link to comment
clownfish1124
thats not alive, it's plastic... Link to comment
jm82792
Nope! I have my license from DLNR. I can legally take 5 specimens of fish unless otherwise stated on their rules. I can only remove them from certain areas and times(not at night normally) Removal of SPS is totally illegal same with LPS. Only soft coral can be removed, but only if you have a special permits that only one person has been able to get. I see the no stony coral law as apain, only if Waikiki aquarium fragged then sold from their own tanks(they have SPS display tanks). " Aquarium Permit - required for any person to use fine mesh net for collecting aquatic life for an aquarium. Report required if commercial. No fee. HRS 188-31. Available online or from DAR offices." http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar/licenses_permits.html The only place that sells softies legally http://www.alohacorals.com/storefront/index.php/contacts/ The Nepenthes isn't plastic http://images.google.com/images?q=nepenthe...sa=N&tab=wi Ps sorry about the typos. I was going to fix them then my laptop died, I had to charge it then go to another part of the room to hookup to the Ethernet cable. Link to comment
jmigchelbrink
We get LPS and SPS, you get a free million gallon reef in your back yard.... I donno, my favia is pretty sweet. Haha start a biotope already Link to comment
jm82792
I really wanty to I'm wanting to do a 55 gallon(cheap PC lighting) with a tang trio and small fish. I want to finish my 7 gallon rimless cubed first (it's just sitting empty),with mh that could take some time. Update Tank has been moved to my 7 gallon, my 7 gallon will be moved to a larger setup since I have a 24 inch T5 retro I bought. Link to comment
