I know we live in a culture that doesn't value education or understanding, but surely there is someone out there that still finds the act of learning why things are called what are called interesting. Besides, some things are simply wrong. Percents are exactly that per cien (= per 100). That is why $100 bills are called C-notes. And a logistic scale that measures the relative concentration of H+ to HO- ions from 1 to 100,000,000,000,000 =(10^14 which is why pH is commonly measured on a scale from 1 to 14) surely can not be accurately portrayed as a per cent. sjpresley Posted November 1, 2002 Share Posted November 1, 2002 10^8.2 = 158,489,319 For comparative purposes: 10^8.0 = 100,000,000 10^7.8 = 63,095,734 notice that there is a 58% change in the power of hydrogen from a pH of 8.0 to 8.2 So from 7.8 to 8.2 you have more than doubled the measurement of the power of hydrogen. Guess what the % increase is from a pH of 7.8 to 8.0, yep 58% So for every .2 change in your pH reading there is a 58% change in the relative ion concentrations your animals are exposed to. Now you probably understand why it is always advised to change pH slowly and why you should acclimate fishes to your water instead of just plunking them in. If there is any difference in pH of the water they are in and that of your tank you will almost surely send your charges into shock (pun intended). I'm no chemist, I just know a little math and what pH measures. Martin Moe does a pretty good job explaining such things in his books. For a more thorough cogent explanation of pH I'm sure a 30 second internet search will yield more than you bargained for. Link to comment
