pismo_reefer
In this thread I will display and discuss various methods of coral propagation. Lps, Sps, Zoa., Mini Carpet's, etc. If you have a suggestion... MAKE IT!!! Animalmaster6 had the genius idea. You can all thank him. Hopefully this does some good... Tools / supplies: For the delicates..... - Stainless steel bone cutters - Stainless 14" Tweezers - Bowl of tank water to rinse frags off in. - Super glue gel - Glue activator (Boston Aqua Farms) - Dremel w/ Diamond bit - Ceramic frag plugs - Razorblades... For the not-so delicates.... - Hammer - Screwdriver - Solid area to hammer on... Mine is a toolbox, with a peice of wood and a towel on top. Ready for surgery... - Keep your area and your TOOLS clean and organized. - Filth breeds disease. Period. - Organization will save you alot of grief.... (I cant tell you how many times I had to go searching for things, while a frag lay in cold-water or open air...) Make sure you have good light to frag under... - Seeing stops you from getting hurt. - It also helps for cut-planning purposes... *Notice how I can see my whole fragging area.... Clearly. pismo_reefer
... Victim #1.... Leptastrea's. Leptastrea is an LPS coral, that encrust's with tiny polyps. They grow fast, and are quite freindly amongst other lps and softies. Keep them away from sps. Shhhh, little one...... It'll only hurt for a moment.... -Pick your cut line and stick with it! Mwa ha hahahahaha! - Let the diamond bit do all the work. - If you hit a rough spot, rock the bit back and forth, like a saw.... *clean edge's make for nice healing. A new begining is always nice. Dry your frag plug.... The Frag's base and the Plug should be dried prior to gluing. Grab some SuperGlue Gel.... (The stuff Reef's run on!) It helps to open the stuff. Now we're in business... Talked to BAF at MAX... This stuff is NO joke! Bamm!!!! Link to comment
Aquanist
What? No tattoos? No cigarettes? I like Kraylen's vid better. JK. No really - great thread! Admins feel free to remove this post and make this a sticky! Link to comment
pismo_reefer
... If you have a ring saw, then this next one doesnt apply to you. Then again, if you have a ring saw, you prolly aren't reading a fragging tutorial... Gold Dust Favia.... Favia Speciosa. Every once in a while, you gotta clear the way first..... Dremel thru the skeleton, but the flesh gets stuck? That's where the Razor's come into play! You think you're a tough guy, huh? - Dont be afraid to flip it over, and smack it a good one. - Just make sure you start a guide cut. Who's a tough guy, now!??? Sometimes you just gotta man up! - Chop the whole top off and cut it into smaller frags. - this allows the mother colony lots of light access, and space. Try to plan cuts around the mouth structures.... - You can totally split the mouths into 2 frags, as long as half a mouth is there. This is a different Favia, but it shows exactly what I mean... notice how a planned cut, can save you from killing even a single head. Link to comment

pismo_reefer
Your better half is gonna be pissed when they realize you just put a hole in their good towel!! lolNice thread! Those are my "Coral Towels"..... She also made sure I never use her: sink, bath tub, towels, bathroom, tupperware, turkey baster, etc... Oh, or, "Anything else that can possibly hold water." But I got to go buy all that stuff for me to use.... What she was pissed about, was ruining the old hardwood under the carpet..... I told her, "Honey, this means you get to pick NEW hardwood floors...." She was like.... Link to comment
animalmaster6
Thank you!!!! This is going to help very much! Question: What is a really good dremel? Link to comment
pismo_reefer
Thank you!!!! Suck up... Question: What is a really good dremel? This is what I use.... http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_0...20070921x00003a You're gonna have to shell out an additional $25 to buy a diamond bit..... My diamond bit has made 1000+ frags, and still cuts lps like butter. A word to the wise.... This model of dremel is good for the hobbyist, but if you want to do some serious work..... You need a "corded" dremel. No batteries= No need to charge/ change battery. OR... You could just buy a Ring Saw. Link to comment

animalmaster6
Meh I have to wait on a dremel and a ring saw :/ I'm thinking of starting out with this and a few extra scalpels. Do you think I can cut LPS, SPS, Ricordia, Z's and P's with it? http://www.marinedepot.com/Dissekt_Rite_Ul...-FIMTCP-vi.html Link to comment
ReefDreamz
Does the dremel usually cut right through them, or do you need to secure the frags down a bit? Link to comment
pismo_reefer
Does the dremel usually cut right through them, or do you need to secure the frags down a bit? I hold the frags with mah fingers..... * BE CAREFUL WHEN DOING THIS!!!! I'm thinking of starting out with this and a few extra scalpels. Do you think I can cut LPS, SPS, Ricordia, Z's and P's with it? The problem I forsee with having that kit and no dremel, is the lack of precise cuts. You want a precise line to split the lps on. You dont wanna just go in there crackin' stuff with bone cutters.... Fragging is surgery... not Saw VI That would be fine for sps and softies tho... this thread is like Link to comment
clownfish14
i want more omgomgomg this thread is great good job. now you need to do some sps Link to comment
