bdawg6381
I've done the 'fuge mod on my BC8. I left the grate in the bottom and put one small piece of LR on it to keep it weighted down; otherwise it just floats up into the 'fuge area with my algae. The grate helps filter some things from going into your pump chamber. I also put filter floss in the drip tray up top to help filter out unwanted things going into my 'fuge and pump intake. I have an update in the works, and it will be coming soon. Last night I sert up my fuge in Chamber 2, and noticed there is a grate in the bottom of chamber one that is about 1" off the floor of the tank. Did anyone remove this, or did you leave it in place? It appears to just separate the "floor" of chamber 1 from the grill on the bottom. I noticed some sand in there, but nothing else. Anyone? Link to comment
flyingjeff
@ Fugu - You've got PM @ bdawg - Did you put your fuge in chamber 1 or 2? @ Stallen - Your description seems spot on. I actually have chamber one full almost to the top with rubble. When I initally removed the Bio Balls from the second chamber, I just packed it full. when I added the fuge, I just transfered all but the bottom inch or two into chamber one. Next time I have a chance, I will pick it all out again and pull up that grate. I have to pick up a new battery for the Dig Camera, and once that is done, I can get some pics of the new setup posted Link to comment

flyingjeff
Ok...Deep breath... I am well overdue for an update, and so the time has come. There have been quite a few changes since my last update. On Sunday night, I installed my third 18W PC lamp. Thanks to stallen and the others for all the info and inspiration. It went smoothly, with only a few minor threads still hanging (securing bulb hangers, tieing up wiring, etc). The 'fuge mod is up and running well. I used a submersible 5W halogen pond light I found on eBay. I noticed about 1/2 degree temperature change overall, and was quite happy. Over the holidays, the tank was abandoned for 10 days, with only light feeding and water top-offs by the house-sitter. She did a wonderful job, and everything that was alive when we left, was alive when we got home. A little bit of hair algae on the sand, and some red slime in one corner that have both been mostly tamed. My mushrooms actually looked the best the ever had when I walked in the door. I did spend some time wondering how it was doing, and what I would come home to. It is good to know that vacations are still possible (although no longer affordable!) We made some additions on Sunday, and so the stocking list now is as follows: Green Star Polyps - Fragging these like crazy Green and Purple Mushrooms Frogspawn Trumpet Sun Polyps 4 Zoa colonies Clownfish Cleaner Shrimp Red Starfish 5 Blue Hermits Nerite Snails Turbo Snail FTS - Sorry so blurry...I'll do better Mushrooms and Fogspawn Zoas and Starfish Trumpet - Can anyone ID that hitchhiker? Sun Polyps I am totally stoked that we are starting to get some extension on this guy. I was afraid it would be tough to feed, or not open at all, but my wife snapped these shots this afternoon. Says it was munching on Mysis. so I am less worried! I have some more hitchhikers that have recently appeared. I'll post them in the ID forum. I am expecting bad news. I'm off to get a less blurry FTS. A Better FTS Link to comment

flyingjeff
Thanks! The Sun Polyp is coming along nicely. I checked it about 1/2 hour ago, and all but one or two polyps are extended. The ones that are poking out are taking Mysis, so I am quite pleased! Link to comment

flyingjeff
How is that starfish? It's my understanding that those don't usually last long. Starfish didn't make it. After about a week, he started slowing down, and then started developing "bubbles" on his legs. It was all downhill from there. I got nervous, and not having a QT setup, pulled the trigger. stallen
Bummer. That's what I figured though. I was hoping to hear a success story. I'd love to have one. They are very pretty, but not worth it if they are just going to die. Does your clown host anything? Link to comment

I saw him flirting with my GSP yesterday AM, but I am not hopeful. He is very protective of his space though. I had my hand in the tank yesterday, and I guess he was upset that it didn't contain his food. He was hitting me pretty hard. Startled me the first time! He eats from my hands normally, so I didn't expect an attacK. Link to comment
