kilr95ss
Starting a 10g tank with 15lbs of live rock. I overdosed with too much ammonia, it reads off the chart that came with my API test kit. Should I ride it out or do a big PWC? Link to comment
jestep
Are there any fish or coral in the tank, or just water and rock? The whole point of the cycle it to build up that bacteria that turns ammonia into eventually nitrogen gas. As long as there no life at risk, I would just let it go. Link to comment
Ezsharkman
How and why would you dose ammonia? I have never heard of that Just curious? Link to comment

Woogalie
I'm assuming he added straight ammonia to start the cycle. Better to just drop your pants and pinch one into your tank for cycle Link to comment
Ezsharkman
I'm assuming he added straight ammonia to start the cycle. Is that something people actually do? I have read a bunch and never ever heard of such a thing. and I do think woogalie is right, tossing in a big fat turd in there might actually be a better option Link to comment
pablom617
It is pretty common to dose ammonia (in pure form) into the tank to start the cycle.. another easy option is a small piece of fresh fish or shrimp. LOL @ Woogalie for the turd suggestion. Link to comment

LOL @ Woogalie for the turd suggestion. I learn something new everyday. Think i will stick to letting my LR start the cycle... but the turd way sounds kinda fun. Your friends could come over and go "whats that? " You= It's a Charmin Grouper... it's very very rare! Link to comment

Your friends could come over and go "whats that? " You= It's a Charmin Grouper... it's very very rare! I'm sorry. I didn't really elaborate well, adding ammonia is typical when using base rock. EZ you are right the inevitable LR die-off is sufficient to cycle an aquarium. If you were to dose pure ammonia to a tank with LR in order to boost cycle you would most likely kill off many of the cool hitchikers that make liverock cool. Link to comment
Woogalie
See that rock, that one is called a liverock. Oh and that one over there is a brownrock! Very rare Link to comment
.Newman.
lol surprised noone made the comparison to a sea cucumber yet... Dosing ammonia is very common in FW, but it can work for SW too. overdosing is no big deal, just wait it out. keep testing at three day intervals or something until you see the classic spikes happening with nitrite next and then nitrates. Aside for this one overdose, I am assuming you know how to use the ammonia method to correctly cycle the tank. Link to comment
Puff Puffer Give
Yea, not a good idea to pinch a loaf into your tank to start the cycle... At least if you are planning on having a reef tank. Read some of the articles below... but in a nutshell, bacteria from human fecal matter can have very devastating effects on corals. http://www.livescience.com/15625-coral-dis...wastewater.html http://www.pnas.org/content/99/13/8725.short Make sure not to play with your reef tank without washing your hands after dropping a bomb. .Newman.
if anyone is still wondering after that, urine is also out of the question lol. just use pure ammonia from a hardware store. its extremely cheap and cant get easier than that. Link to comment
Ezsharkman
what if we cooked the turd in the oven to kill the bad stuff first???? Beep Beep... gotta go... im baking a loaf Link to comment
BocaIvan
Why not just wait the 4 weeks or so like everyone else. It's a race not a sprint.... Link to comment

FlCandy
I hear that Charmin Groupers and Sea Poocumbers are notorious for carpet surfing? LMAO! You guys are fricking hilarious! You know if a kid poops in a swimming pool they have to drain it, then they put on Hazmat suits and scrub it with acid, then fill the pool back up and give it a HUGE dose of chlorine. OH and urine is Sterile until it comes out of you! Everything in your urinary tract is sterile but the very end/lower urinary tract! Did you know that? I would think a few pieces of fish food would have been sufficient to start a cycle, I wouldn't be comfortable doing pure ammonia. Link to comment
Woogalie
This is my sand-sifting poocumber - Nice growth since I originally cycled my tank with it. Scale to show actual size of specimen. Its about 2 inches thick now Link to comment
