GiantBen Posted December 2, 2009 Share Posted December 2, 2009 In early Sept I replaced my PC bulbs and changed the BC29 fans to SilneX fans. One of the fans crapped out about a month ago. I am still getting a replacement from them, but in the mean time have been running just one fan. Would only running one fan cause the bulbs to go bad already? I've been having a rather bad red hair algae problem. Also, looking back at some old pics, many of my corals don't seem to be doing quite as well as they were. Some have receded. They all seem to be living, but not thriving. I was thinking that my water quality would be the main algae culprit (still do). I have been getting it at my LFS. I am now planning to get an RO/DI unit, but am wondering if bad bulbs could be contributing to this. I have a spare new set, so I can pop em in as soon as my replacement fan shows. FYI, they are nanotuners bulbs. I am near the bottom of my salt bin too, and I have noticed some clumping at the bottom. Would this be a problem? Link to comment
nemmy Posted December 2, 2009 Share Posted December 2, 2009 I doubt them running hot would shorten their life that much. But old bulbs WILL cause algae. What type of food do you feed? Frozen? Pellets? Flakes? How often? Your doing your water changes correct? How old is the tank? How much livestock? Sounds more like a problem with nutrients/phosphates. (which could be coming from your source water as you stated). Try doing a few water changes with bottled distilled water from walmart and see what happens. I doubt the clumpy salt would cause algae, but it could cause some precipitation issues, or dissolving issues. (but you never know what kind of moisture got into it) Link to comment

I feed every two or three days. Never on consecutive days. Your doing your water changes correct? Pretty much every week. I let it slide to 10 days last time because I was rather busy. How old is the tank? About 9-10 months. I started cycling it at the end of Feb. How much livestock? One clown goby, one ocsellaris (bad spelling) clown, one cleaner shrimp, maybe a dozen snails, three hermits, and an assortment of hitchhiker rock crabs. As for corals, zoas, shroom, hammer, toadstool, acan, gsp, xenia. Thinking it may be the water source or the salt or both. Aquariums are fun Indeed. It is sad to see some of my zoas getting choked out by turf algae. The small green colony is almost buried... Link to comment

I've been holing off on getting emeralds until I catch a xanthid crab that has been lurking in my tank. I'm worried he'll just kill em. He's been real tough to catch though. Link to comment
