violinist
This is my first reef. I've had freshwater tanks for many years. Put some pics up before, but have messed around with it so much I'm considering this the 'final' shot. Have not done any mods short of chucking the bioballs and sticking some floss in the top of the 2nd chamber. Have a 50w heater in chamber 1 (didn't bust out the floor, it fit fine) and the sensor of an electronic thermostat hanging in one of the chambers. Happy with how it is setup now, hoping everything does well. Very difficult to just leave it alone and let it grow! Link to comment
opy01
Very difficult to just leave it alone and let it grow! I know exactly what you mean. I started mine about 5 months ago and I am now about to have tank #3 going lol. It is addicting isnt it? How long has you tank been set up? Link to comment
violinist
How long has you tank been set up? Just a couple weeks. Most of the stuff in it was just transferred from a big reef tank (rocks, sand, water, some of the livestock). I had a mushroom detach and fall into the cave in the middle of the rocks. Figured it would either die or prove exactly how much they like 'low light' because I wasn't tearing the tank up (again) to fetch it. It's not completely dark in there, and it managed to fall into the one spot that does get a little bit of light, but still... Today I see two small little mushrooms growing near it and it is back there completely bloomed and looking larger than when I bought it. Amazing! Link to comment

I have one. Only had it about a week so still not sure. I have it up at the top of the tank where it's getting blasted with light, and it's not withering away but that's about all I can tell you. Guy I was talking to said the small lights in the bc's put out a hell of a lot of light given the area they have to cover and the depth they have to penetrate so hoping it works out. Link to comment
BLoCkCliMbeR
im keepin a monti cap in my bc8, its doing great, but its at the top of the tank and i have 2x27watt pc in mine.... im gonna try a birdsnest or some other lower light sps here soon... i also have upgraded the pump to whatever comes w/ the subcurrent filter box, rated 160 w/ hydorflo and and KN for extra flow... if your gonna do sps you need to upgrade the pump Link to comment

Why the pump upgrade? Just had another guy today tell me the opposite of what I'd been told before - stock lights no good for sps in a bc. Link to comment

Just had another guy today tell me the opposite of what I'd been told before - stock lights no good for sps in a bc. no, its an upgrade i just did.....same ballast, different end caps pump upgrade was for extra flow, a must for alot of corals, most folks go with the minijet or maxijet 900... stock lights, ehh...you can get away with specific sps higher up in the tank, but growth will be slower....and even if you beef your light up with another pc retro, youll still be limited to specific sps.....as long as you keep your water perfect, there are exceptions to the no sps rule... elfabuloso (has a sticky in the pico section)ran his 3 gal pico with 2x18watt for along time before he upgraded, and hes got a couple sps thriving....keep in mind his lights were closer to the corals than in a BC8 when you stay in the trenches long enough, you learn what you can and cant keep with what your workin with.... keep in mind there was a time when PC was a staple....dont let everyone tell you that you HAVE to have t5 and halides.....there is more to this reefing deal than high dollar lights Link to comment
violinist
Latest fts. Got everything placed, now just going to wait for growth. Link to comment

They seem to grow pretty quick. Already see new polyps on a couple of those clusters. And, already planning out a larger tank lol. Link to comment
