Bigben7
Hey gang, where is a good place to buy filter floss, and what is the preferred size, coarse or fine? Thanks. Link to comment
bagoegg
Walmart. Back in the craft section get a huge bag of poly-fil pillow stuffing. Cheap and works great. Link to comment
Gerber77
I get Mine at petsmart, a good size bag for 3 dollars. I change the floss every week with 4 tanks. It lasts about 3 weeks. Link to comment
Bonsai
Walmart. Back in the craft section get a huge bag of poly-fil pillow stuffing. Cheap and works great. +1 I bought a 1lb bag (which is huge, about the size of a pillow) for $1.97. Just look for 100% Polyester Fiber -- it is basically the same stuff you'll pay $4 - $6 at a LFS, and with the Walmart stuff, you get about twice as much. Link to comment

As much as you should change it out it's a great deal! I have been using it for years in my reef tank, and before that my turtle tanks! Never had any problems. Link to comment
Paleoreef103
+1 to the Poly-fil. Changing a bit more often than once a week a 2 dollar bag will last you 3-4 months if you use a lot of it and I mean a lot. Link to comment
Bigben7
Thanks guys, both very helpful and fiscally responsible... I appreciate the help. Link to comment
Endler's Game
I use poly-fil in my freshwater tank and plan to in my reef once it gets going. Just make sure you get the flammable stuff. If the bag says flame-resistant/retardant it's the wrong thing. They chemically treat it to reduce flammability, but that makes it dangerous in tanks. Link to comment
pimp4cheddar
what is this for? how/in what unit would it be used....??? Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
For removing small particulates and in anything where water can be passed through it. Link to comment
hcsceo
what is this for? how/in what unit would it be used....??? It is used instead of filter pads or sponges to catch debris and fillter fine particles from the water as it is dumped into a fuge or maybe an overflow in a AIO. It basically keeps larger particles from clogging up your pumps, skimmers etc. by removing them first. It is cheap and does a great job. Replace it weekly and you won't have any issues. DonnieP
Heads up folks! I just got an email back from the people that make the fiber fill you get at Walmart and they say not to use it in your tank, it could leach iron oxide, here is what they sent me. This should be a sticky with as many of us that use it!! Hello Donnie, We do not recommend using our product for fish tanks or water filtration because some of the fibers are recycled and can contain iron oxides which could be harmful if ingested. It is my understanding that water filters need to be made from 100% polypropylene – which is an expensive process. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help. Link to comment
Austin
Whoa rly? Iron oxide, isn't that RUST?? O NO I love filter floss but lately, and out of nowhere, it continues to clog my 12gal NC rear 1st chamber after a couple hours, causing the pump to run dry. I have changed absolutely NOTHING. It works fine for about 4 hours then all of a sudden gets clogged and there goes the pump, suckin' dry. Anyone ever experience this? I don't want to go back to sponges but I think I have no choice.
