so I posted about a week ago to see how much it would be to start a 40 gallon, and it was kind of expensive so i was thinking maybe i can start out with just a little 10 gallon Hex. i was thinking of buying an Rodi water unit for easy water changes but other than that i dont know what to do as far as what other equipment to get i got some Hob filters laying around. i have about 4-600. not to worried about livestock at the moment just want the rocks and whatnot to get the cycling part of the tank done. Thanks for any advice :)

what are you looking to do, you can easily set up a 40 for what your budget is, but the hex tank is hard unless you really want to build one. that being said a small simple reef is easy with a good light, filter, heater, and dedication. come up with an end result in your mind then, figure out how to get there.

I was talking to a couple of people and they said it more about keeping up with the water changes that why I wanted to get an rodi unit so I can make some pre made salt water. But yeah I was looking to do a hob although I don't know what kind of filter media to put in it yet. also I was thinking about getting a digital salinity refractometer other than that im not sure where so start im sure il get upgrades for it along the way tho haha

The reason no one is responding is because you should be able to figure all of your questions out by yourself through research. Research is the foundation of this hobby. That being said, ditch the hex. They're a pain in the ass to clean. DO yourself a favor and get an IM 10 or 20.

i have no problem with cleaning the tank i love the shape of the hex and i wish i could get a bigger hex but there expensive brand new and couldent find any on kijiji ( Canadian craigs list ) iv been trying to find some fourms on here but non of them are helpful to me and cant find anything on setting one up or all the ones I do are 3-5 years old

A hex tank would really unique and cool although 10gallons would distort the aquarium via the viewing panels...

Soo I think you should build a larger 15g or 20g tank with acrylic or glass and also have a in tank sump on one viewing pannel

Imo.. I think that would make a really nice tank without throwing your budget too far out.

I had a hex at one time and hated it. The height vs width sucks for a reef tank. If you go simple you can build a tank in your budget...it just won't have all the fancy things. I just built a 10 gallon and have about $300 in it. You can buy RODI water at the grocery store for less than $1 a gallon if you want to save on the RODI unit since with a 10 gallon you only go through about 5 gallons a month after it is running. If you are a DIYer/researcher you can do a lot of things yourself. Here is an example of what i spent:

  • Tank - 15
  • Plastic for AIO filtration chambers - free (excess at work)
  • Plasticoat and Silicone for AIO filtration - $8
  • MaxiJet 600 - $20
  • Heater - $20
  • Used heater and pump for mixing salt - $10 at LFS
  • Light - $50 on amazon (granted not the best but works for getting started)
  • Live sand - $25
  • Base and Live Rock - $40
  • Salt - $15
  • Food - $10
  • Seachem Stability - $10
  • Refractometer - $20 ebay

Total spent = $250 before fish/corals.

Have you ever built a tank before?

Check out youtube videos on building a tank.

As for hex, its a neat shape but cleaning every panel of glass will get tiresome.

Buying a standard 10-15g in cda is probably cheaper than buying the glass and or acrylic.

i wish i had the tools to build one, also i would need to figure out the exact amount of gallons when i have the finished product so i dont mess up my tank for having incorrect measurements and that would be cool to add a sump on a panel hmmmmm, i got some YouTubeing to do :bling::bowdown::owned:

To me, reading both your threads, you aren't ready. Keep reading here. For beginners more water is better while you learn. The 40 Breeder is the best starting tank in my opinion. There are simple overflow kits where you can drill your own glass for an overflow to make it reef ready and make a simple 20 gallon long sump underneath.

The 10G Hex is a bad idea if you ask me. If you don't go with the 40 breeder try doing a 20 gallon long. Since it's shallow you don't need a super expensive light to penetrate if you want to do any corals. I ran a 20 Long with a 10G sump for a long time with good results.

as a beginner to the hobby, the only thing that sounds like a worse idea than a hex is building your own hex.

in another thread, a member priced out a decent build for your 600 dollar budget, that's what you should probably focus on if youre really itching to do some DIY.

i doubt it'll take $600 to build a 10-20 gallon tank... Building a tank is pretty easy. If you're actually arsed to build one.

A DIY hex tank would look unique. Or you could save some money and time and buy a normal tank.

Do what you wanna do.

That looks like a freshwater tank with real? Plants

That's a 80gallons right there which means a reef is gonna cost you around $800-$900 to set everything up...... But you'll get heaps of stability and space!

Btw if he's gonna throw in a freshwater light that's gonna be no use.

Be sure to read for couple more weeks before cycling

and we're always here to help you.

To be honest he said he was using it for salt water but I was wondering if the pic was freshwater he said hes had the tank for a year, I think im just gonna customize it the hell out of it. I gotta say this blessing popped up out of no where, and I agree with the research part of it cause I got a lotta work to do haha but im glad I have such a big tank to work with im gonna have plenty of space and the fact that it has an overflow is blessed. Il keep everyone posted on what im doing so I don't make any newbie mistakes.
