This Powerhead OK for my tank?

Hello everyone, new member to the website and the whole reef tank hobby. I'm currently in day 1 of cycling my tank and even though it was recommended to me I think the powerhead I currently have in there might be to much for my tank. Possibly this may just be down to placement in the tank but I have already tried it in 3 positions already and may just be overthinking things. The reason I think it may be to much is due to the amount of sand it is moving around and making large mounds it some areas and leaving thin patches in others, the pictures may show that. Any advice or information would be great!

Welcome to Nano-Reef.com.

Yeah, the pump is a bit strong for your tank, but might be OK depending on your livestock. Over time, as bacteria colonize the sand, it will tend to shift less. You might want to try a gentler pump, or replacing the substrate with CaribSea special grade sand (1.0 to 2.0mm grain size): http://www.marinedepot.com/CaribSea_Arag_Alive_Special_Grade_Reef_Sand_Live_Sand_for_Saltwater_Reef_Aquariums-CaribSea-CS1790-FISSLS-vi.html

That pump is rated for 56L + a bit strong

if you don't want to replace anything you should silicone some kind of spongey/ breathable material on to the grills pr intake of the nano stream

Because I will be looking to get some soft coral that prefer low to medium flow would I be better off getting a different powerhead that is more suitable to my tank size? If not is Saltydudes suggestion a practical method? Other than both of those is there not a device I can plug the powerhead into to control the amount of power sent to the device to control the speed that way?

Unfortunately, no.

Restricting the input should lower the output. However, I'd just get a smaller pump.
