What trim is ok to use for corners?

I built my stand using 3/4" red oak plywood, so I need to cover the exposed corners of the plywood. Do I need to stick with red oak for these corner trim pieces, or can I switch out for pine or what?

Also since its 3/4" thick ply, I didnt even see anything at my local HD...should I try somewhere else to find this or how are you guys doing it?

When I did this I cut the plywood short a saw blade width on purpose and then cut 1/8" strips of pine to cover the end with. Sand smooth and stain.

Otherwise what you choose do to is largely dependent on what your finish will be. If you're painting or doing an extremely dark stain then you could probably get away with a different wood, but honestly I would just keep it oak as it's not going to cost too much more than a high quality pine and you only have to do the edges.

If you're going for a lighter stain then I like my suggestion above. An alternative is to put some sort of decorative molding up to cover the edges. Call around to a few places to trim selection in oak. Not all HD's carry the same stuff. If you have another big box you can try them or just look up lumber or finish carpentry in your area and make a few calls. Sometimes kitchen places have trim that's unfinished.
