Algae Phases in break in period

Recommended Posts

I have just set up a 10G nano reef, and i know that i a long time ago fell over some guide for the algae phases in the break in period.

More or less step wise with what normally happen, like, first brown algae due to ... then green algae due to...

I havn't been able to find anything like it, does anybody know somewhere to find info about this? I have tried google searches, but haven't been able to find out. Otherwise, will somebody be so kind perhaps to list the phases, and the reasons they happen? I like to geek about my knew setup, and knowing the reasons for the various algae is something i would like to know :)

This is going to depend on the algae present in your tank, algae introduced to your tank, nutrient and light levels, etc. There isn't a concrete order in which the different kinds of algae pop up, but certain things eat through bio-available nutrients first for lack of competition (like diatoms with silicates).

Okay, i see, I thought there was a certain system to it. Then I will just google for some regular info about various species instead, makes sense i was struggling to find a specific guideline then :)

No definitely no order.

Some will say diatoms, then cyano, then hair but its not definitive.

It all depends on the things Mariaface listed.

Most usually see a golden brown dusting after cycle. After 4 tanks, I can say its not a guarantee.

Stick to a good maintenace routine, keep a low bioload, don't over feed and you should be able to avoid mass algae breakouts.

After my cycle, it took a little while before I saw diatoms, and then after diatoms went away I never really saw much else. I mean, there's coralline algae, but no issues with hair algae or anything like that (save for little tufts that hitchhiked with frags). But my tank has only been set up since May.
