Oldsalt01
Does anyone make a power head with an EXTERNAL motor? I hesitate to put another heat maker in my Biocube cuz it's already a heat pump with the upgraded return MJ900. Link to comment
Friendly
yes, the WP10 is very good for nano tanks. it's the one I'm interested in. of course, there is the option to get a power head that works from the outflow of your pump. you often need to upgrade the pump to have the output necessary to drive it reliably...from what I have read. Friendly
hey all, powerheads are new to me. are there are one's that are operated by the outflow pressure of your pump and don't have any actual drive? thanks! Link to comment
StevieT
No. Powerhead is another term for pump. Runs off of electricity not rainbows and sunshine. What you describe is a flow director. Hydor and Innovative Marine make one Link to comment
Reef Queso
The Sunshine Aquatics booth at MACNA had a rainbow powered pump coming out soon. Link to comment
Friendly
are flow director's popular or more of a gimmick? also, I'm trying to figure out if the 'rainbow & sunshine' comment was sarcasm and in jest? Link to comment
Reef Queso
I haven't tried a flow director. I'd really like to try the Innovative Marine Spin Stream. Problem with my JBJ 6 gallon is the flow is way too much to be constant direction, so the Spin Stream or the Hydor Flo will create a random current which is a nice addition without having to add a $250 MP-10 to a very small tank. Reef Queso
I will say tho I just bought some 1/2" loc-line and a loc-line Y adapter with another flow nozzle from marine depot. Put it on my nano and the flow was GREATLY reduced. I've seen people upgrading the pump in the AIO chambers and I could never figure out why because wight he stock nozzle by itself at 160GPH theres no way in heck I'd upgrade that. Pretty much everything in my tank is blowing and my xenias don't pulse theres so much flow. however, with the new loc-line (i removed it for now) you would 100% have to upgrade that flow pump if you make ANY additions to flow direction in my opinion. Which aquarium do you have? Link to comment
Clown79
Flow directors are a good option. They create a turbulent flow. I used the hydor yrs ago and liked it. I also use the IM spin stream on my retutn nozzle in my IM 10g. I really like it, creates a nice flow. They do need a more powerful pump as it cuts the flow rate. So if the pump is 100gph it cuts in half. If you need to cut the flow, its a great way without replacing the pump Link to comment
