Creature?

Hello all,

I am new to Nano-Reef.com but I am hoping that someone just might be able to help me? I have lost 3 fish within the last 3 weeks and I am thinking it is due to a creature that I found living in my reef rock about 1 week ago.

I have 2 tanks a 65 gallon and a 29 gallon cube.

I have lost a goby, a 2 spot blenny, and a firefish (with this last one, he actually was injured enough that I had to do away with him) and I am blaming this creature..........I am going to try to include two stills that I took from a video that I recorded earlier in the week.

The first is with natural light from my camera and it looks to possibly have a mouth or something open with a black worm like thing that it "wiggles" (to possibly entice) and the second picture is another still just after the "thing" has snapped shut and is under the blue light for viewing. It is currently wedged between 2 pieces of rock and in order for me to remove it I will have to tear my rock apart to get to it.

If anyone knows what this creature is.........PLEASE answer this and let me know?

I have been keeping reef tanks now for the better part of 15 years and thought I had seen it all until now!

Yikes! I can't really tell from the photos as to what it is. Is it possible to post higher resolution images? or can you load the videos to youtube and then post here?

Look up bobbit worm - does it look like that? I thought these things were rare but another member just found one in his tank and was losing fish as well.

And welcome to Nano Reef!

Its hard to tell in the pic. Can you post the video. We can see it in action.

Lol. Stellablue, the first thing I thought of was a bobbit worm!

Does it look like what i posted?

I'd get the rock out, into a bucket of fw and wait until it dies.

Or you will need to get a trap in the tank, bait and wait.

also, you didn't mention which tank this was in - but since you have two tanks, I'd get all remaining fish out of the tank you're losing fish in and put them in the other until you figure out what is going on.

I thought Bobbit worm too. That one that was biting his fish in half and dragging the fish bodies into the Rock. Someone on here captured it. I can't make out your pictures. Good luck with getting your monster out of your tank!!!

Yeah, I'm with everyone else. Take out a rock at a time and put it in a 5g half bucket of ro/di and see what crawls out and kill it. Til all your rocks are out on the counter so you know it hasn't crawled back into something else.

Does this look like your creature? I would definitely suggest a secure lid ;-)

Inquiring minds!! What did you find out?

I'm pretty sure this is what happened...the camera mercifully gets turned off just before he gets eaten

Why would you ever grab one of those things with your bare hands?? I'd be down there in a freakin' chain mail shark suit if I was trying to catch that sucker!
