No Substrate

Hi Guys,

 

I would like to have just live rock with no substrate in my tank,

Is it safe to place the live rock directly onto the glass , or must i place egg crate (Not too keen on this as i don't think it will look nice) or a piece acrylic on the bottom ?

perfectly safe as long as you arent dropping the rock in, you just want to make sure the rock is secure in place

I will be gluing my final scape together and then placing it into my tank.

There is something other bare bottomers use thats not unsightly like eggcrate.

 

I think its called star board or star foam. It looks like sand under the rock.

HDPE is the material, I think - cutting board, more or less. You need to cut it to size and make sure it isn't sitting on the tank's silicone seams. Then, if you don't want detritus getting trapped between the board and the glass, silicone it into place and let that cure.

 

But regular bare bottom will work, too!

I use small rock rubble to make a base on top of this:

But regular bare bottom will work, too!

then stack rock up making the pieces larger as I go up, or in your case the whole thing glued together and put on the base rock.
