Lol yeah bummer they don't have smaller bars! Why not just hang it?

Popcorn ceiling in a rental house, and possible relocation of tank in the future. Having the on-tank mount just works for my situation a little better right now. Theoretically I could turn the light sideways and get another one on there! lol. BTW thanks for stopping by Harry.

That's it for now folks, will try to update more often (yea, more lies..i know). Thanks for stopping by. Gonna continue the war on algae, keep water parameters and maintenance up and try and resist the urge to dump the whole pacific ocean in. Sorry bout my crappy cell phone pix but I promise my next serial hobby is gonna be photography. I leave you with Jack, my Korean inflatable Doberman who is none to impressed with my tank or the time I spend staring into it:

Just found your thread - nice start on the tank and an even better start on the thread :)

Jack, your "inflatable doberman" cracks me up

I'm pretty sure you will consider buying the Apex the best reefing decision you ever made. I can't live without mine.

Still disappointed about no cookies. And don't even get me started about the other thing.

Thanks teeny, there will be cookies eventually, the orgy is gonna be a little harder to arrange but I haven't given up hope! I am super excited to get my Apex, the safety net it can provide and program-ability are amazing, will post some more here as I get things moving along. Yup, i'm even thinking about adding shelves and cleaning up that mess under my stand, lol. Thanks for stopping bye!

SPS orgy? I see only one SPS in your tank. Doesn't it take at least three? :P

We are working in that direction, it was more of a preparatory statement :)

So i tripped today and accidentally hit "BUY IT NOW SUCKA!" on an Apex system. Oops

I've hit that button "accidentally" many times. That's why I do "hold for customer" so that I can sneak hardware past my wife  . Apex is freaking awesome! I control my lights, return pumps, heater, ATO, watch my fishies through Apex and webcam, temp, and my two MP10WE's through the Apex WXM module wirelessly! Congrats.

Off to my LFS! Found one that's only 104 miles away instead of 160..woohoo! Plastic bag porn later!

104 miles? Wow, I'm lucky to have mine about 30 minutes away. But worth it!

Dude just order online!

That is very true! Imagine just the money you would save on gas! Not to mention the great deals that you can find from the online retailers right here on NR.

Yep save money on gas and probably get a discount at an online store. I mean I'm all for supporting local stores but if they're that far away... Save money and time!

Dude just order online!

This town is so F'd 80-90% of my online orders end up mis-shipped or delayed by several days through UPS or FedEx. Neither outfit will do AM delivery to residential either so anything I order ends up riding around on a scorching truck until 5PM or later. Its so bad I can only order cigars for my humidor in the winter. Don't trust anything live with delivery here. I was shocked when I got my CUC alive, of course we had a storm blowing through and temps were only in mid 70's to low 80's that week. And lets not even discuss damage, I ordered a 1K computer desk online and after three damaged deliveries of the same item I gave up and pieced the three broken ones into one usable one.

How about if you just hold the package at either the UPS or FedEx Hub if it's not too far from you? That's what I do sometimes when I don't want to be waiting for them all day. I just give the online retailer the address of the hub.

I tried that with UPS once and showed up to a $300 box of cigars sitting on a loading dock on a 97 degree day. Haven't tried FedEx yet but they seem to have a nicer enclosed facility here so it might be worth a try, maybe i'll give it a test run before the summer sets in.

So today I picked up a:

  1. Diamond Watchman Goby.
  2. Fire Shrimp.
  3. Emerald crab (on probation, but the little guy started eating GHA 10 seconds after in the water so he might be a keeper if he stays away from my corals).
  4. Nice head of mixed zoas encrusted on a rock with a piece of SPS skeleton sticking out of it.
  5. A chunk of Favia with green eyes
  6. A brain coral
  7. A encrusted clump of starfire polyps ( I have one rock they can go crazy on, after that they get weed whacked everytime they step off)
  8. When I opened the styrofoam box at home I found the shop keeper had thrown in a acro frag for free, not sure what type yet.

The goby and brain were already on my list of must haves. When I used to dive off of Okinawa I always got a kick out of watching gobies of any kind, tons of personality. And the brain corals, down around the 40-60 foot mark on the ocean side of the reefs I found brains almost as big as Volkswagens in a couple of areas, they were amazing.

The shop was kinda funny. There was an older asian gentleman that owns the place but I guess his son is the coral guy and wasn't in the shop. He didn't know the names of anything in the coral displays, everytime I asked it was like "oh, I dont remember, so many names that kind, you know". Their coral tanks were nice and clean, well laid out and lit. Didn't see any sickly or dead looking corals. They had several mixed reef display tanks that were very nice and well kept. I scoped out the goby for quite a while and he was actively sifting sand and very curious like gobies are. I don't have a QT, need to set one up, so cross the fingers a little trip to the drip drip and in they went. The corals got a good inspection and a dip and everything is opening up as I type which is good. Looking for a camera, I know I bought one of those damn things years ago, I'll get some pics up after a couple of beers and shots of Apple flavored Crown. Also mixing water for tomorrows water change.

  • 4 weeks later...

3 weeks without an update, I am negligent as hell. Actually I am usually too busy or drunk and hanging out in Lawns Lounge. I still haven't got a good camera (spent all my money on equipment and corals..lol) and I hate to post crappy cell pics but i'll try and tease a few of the not so horrible ones out. Tank is churning right along, everything has stabilized nicely and no crazy swinging parameters. I am down to one water change every six days and me and my Emerald crab beat the hell out of GHA. I still get little pea size pieces of it on my back wall but that quickly gets mowed down by the snails. Parameters today:

Ammonia-0

Nitrite-0

Nitrate-2.5

Phos- Undetectable by my test kit.

Calcium- 440

Alk- 9.8

Mag- 1360

PH - 8.3

I have been slowly reducing my GFO to keep a little phos in the tank for my Zoas. I know I have a little because they are doing very well and the random little spots of GHA that show up on the back wall. I am going to try and maintain this balance as it seems my SPS is not getting pissed at my Nitrates/ Phosphates at this moment. Anyway enough foreplay lets get down to the dirty.

First up the livestock:

Little blood red fire shrimp, lives in the rock hardly ever see him like most, got him eating pellets outta my hand now. The diamond goby lets him clean it's gills and sometimes I find myself hoping it just rips his gills out. He has molted twice in the last three weeks and is just a cool little critter me and my wife both enjoy.

Next "the Kraken". I call him that because he destroys everything everywhere he goes. Kinda a love hate relationship with this diamond goby. He sure as hell keeps the sandbed clean but man does he overdo it and he spits sand all over everything. So I have to blast the dirt off of everything daily but I sure don't have to worry bout nitrates building in my sandbed. I got lucky and he wont starve as he will eat anything I throw in the tank in addition to his dirt diet.

My clown and cleaner goby have taken up life long residence behind the MP-10 in the corner of the tank. They come out and eat and are both doing well but I haven't got any pics of them recently, honestly its easy to almost forget they are there which is a bummer because he's a really nice looking Picasso. The crab, who knows, he pops his head up one a week to let me know he's still there and thinking about munching on my corals.

So I ordered a couple of corals from live aquaria, and then fell into the Aqua San Diego pit of heavenly bliss. Heres some pics:

Green Polyp Crateriformis Acropora Coral (right) Happy as hell, great polyp extension from day 1. Followed by a RM Rainbow Nasuta Acropora Coral (mid), browned up nicely on arrival, will see if it colors up. And a Chile Pepper Plating Monitpora, stayed green and red bits starting to show now that its up on frag rack in better light. These were the items I ordered from Live Aquaria, put em in the dirt for day one.

And then the ASD order arrived. BAM,the gangs all here! It was middle of crazy work week so everything went into the dirt for a couple of days.

Nice slab of Blue Sympodiums from Live Aquaria, little pissed off from the move but have since opened up nicely with a few bonus Zoa's on the rock.

022_zpsbumvbekj.jpg

And a bunch of random Zoa frags. My plan is cover the lower rocks with Zoa's and Blue Sympodiums and put the SPS on the upper shelf of main structure (the SPS ramp I call it).

Finally, this last weekend I moved the goodies to a frag rack, acclimating to light and a couple seem to be coloring back up well.

The Dragon Queen in the back of this first pic is a beautiful little frag, hope I can keep it that way.

If I can keep everything alive we may get this orgy started after all!
