cjrudy
I never post reviews but absolutely had to in this case. I decided to get a skimmer for my 17 gallon SPS dominant nano tank and wanted it small because every thing sits directly in tank as opposed to an AIO tank. After reading up on the limited selection of nano skimmers I decide on the Tunze 9001 because of the Tunze reputation and its small foot print, 4.3 x 2.5 x 8.5 inch which is perfect for my small tank. I was impressed with the build quality but disappointed to realize that I needed to add an attachment for surface skimming. I decide to put it into the tank with the standard configuration to start. The skimmer immediately started spewing tons of microbubbles, obviously something I expected and assumed I would have to live with for a few weeks until it broke in. After ten days of microbubbles and my surface building up a nice slime it was time to try the surface skimming attachment. It was easy to switch but added an additional 2.5 in width, not to mention the unsightly tube coming out of the skimmer. After another ten days of terrible microbubbles and very below average surface skimming I decide enough was enough. I pulled the skimmer out, cleaned it up and returned it. (Gotta love Amazon) During this time I stumbled across the Tunze 9004 and decided to give it a try. Upon receiving it, I again notice the impressive build quality. The other nice feature was the primary surface skimming intake was built in, no additional attachments needed. The footprint was bigger 4.3 x 3.5 x 12 however even with a slightly larger width, it was still smaller than the 9001 with the attached surface skimmer. The 9004 fit nicely into the corner of my tank, blending with the black back wall making it almost unnoticeable. From the moment I fired it up I had NO microbubbles and within hours the surface scum was gone. It has now been just over one week, I still have no microbubbles, my surface is crystal clear and its pulling a nice frothy brown liquid. I could not be happier and cannot believe the difference between the 9001 and 9004. My only one concern is when I need to take it apart for cleaning, whether it will go back together right or cause micobubbles after that. But until them I am super impressed. Link to comment
