AC70 impeller question

picozoa

Recommended Posts

I have a 3 gallon jbj pico and I have ordered the AC70 for it which should arrive this week.

From what I've been reading, I can expect the flow for this to be kind of high, higher than I'd actually like. So I've been looking for solutions on cutting the flow.

I understand that the motor for the 20/30/50 and 70 are all alike. I was thinking I can order the AC20 impeller and that would cut my flow down considerably. So a few questions for anyone who has experience in this(hopefully).

1. Will the 20 impeller fit and work properly with the 70? Seems like it does based on my research, but I've really only been able to find direct evidence of someone say it was fine in a 50, and someone saying they tried a 110 in a 20 and it wasn't good.

2. Is the flow enough with just the 20? Should I instead get a 30 or 50?

For the most part, this tank will be a zoa garden with maybe 1 or 2 SPS on the top of the rocks.

Thanks!

Fits yes.

First cut the impeller equally on all the fins. This will reduce flow. The intake tube can also be adjusted to reduce flow.

Awesome, thanks.

You mean try cutting the impeller fins on the AC70 first? That's interesting if I can get them even enough.

Yep. Worth a try before spending more if you don't like the flow from the stock impeller.

Thanks, I found an AC20 impeller for like $9 online, so I picked it up. I think I'll use it as a backup and try trimming the 70 down to the flow I want, unless the 20 just happens to be perfect right off.
