Time to Move! How do I do it!?!?

I recently got my own place with the lady but haven't moved my 12 gallon cube. Since I use to stay with my dad I wasn't in much of a rush to move it but I think it's time to move it over. Luckily I didn't move to far, only about 20-30 minutes.

I am also planning on replacing the current sand with Tropic Eden Reefflakes.

Any precautions or suggestions on how I should go about moving everything?

Is it as easy as taking everything apart and putting them in buckets and haul it to the new place and reassemble? Also planning on having a few gallons of fresh saltwater, mind as well do a water change during the move.

Thanks!

If you weren't planning on putting in new sand, I'd say go ahead with your plan. With you wanting to replace the sand, you may go through another cycle.

Live rock in one bucket or tote, livestock in another. I would get a battery operated air pump for the livestock. Maybe keep a handful of rinsed (in old tank water) sand to help seed the reefflakes. I would change out half the water with new once it's all set up. Maybe even put more old sand in a nylon bag and toss it in the bag chamber just to help avoid a possible soft cycle

Thanks guys keep them coming please...

so the plan is:

Once I receive the reef flake rinse it with freshwater than leave it in buck for maybe a week with some tank water. (possibly adding a opened ziplock bag with the old sand in the bucket)

Then, live rock in one bucket and then livestock in another with a battery operated air pump.

Once at the new place, Sand, Live rock, water, then livestock.

I'm moving too!!! Our house closes on Friday. I'm moving three 30 gallon tanks. One freah planted, two salt. It's finally time and I'm scared as hell. Everyone says to save the tanks and do them last. I'm leaving my sand in. Puttin live rock in one container and livestock in another. I think rather than buckets for the livestock and live rock I'm going to go with cleaned out Rubbermaids. Can vinegar hurt anything if it's not rinsed enough? I'm also going to scrub the live rock of hair algae before replacing them. We'll be bringing half the water with us and fresh salt water. That's my plan anyhow. About 20 to 30 minutes. I don't think I'll need an air stone?

So... this is a fun idea. I did a tank swap. No travel time.

The sand might cause an issue, but live rock should house bacteria too. If you're planning to "pre-seed" the new sand i have a couple ideas, depending on sand depth you could create a deep sand bad and anatomic condition which could be an issue. And water doesn't transport bacteria... but a little ammonia dosing might help.

This is what I did when I moved a 29g about 3 and a half hours away.

First I emptied most of the water into 5 gallon buckets and put a lid on them. In one bucket I had a starfish and cardinalfish in there, and in another I had a small rock with a sea fan in it. I suggest putting livestock in as many seperate buckets as you can to minimize stressful interactions (especially between corals). I put all of the live rock and about a pint of the old sand in a styrofoam box with water and taped it up. Ditched the rest of the sand, loaded up the tank stand and top into the car and all the buckets and live rock box. I also brought 20g of newly made saltwater (Important!).

When I got to the new place, I set up all the equipment and poured the new sand in first, then added all of the freshly made salt water and the pint of old sand and live rocks into the tank. This was enough water to get the filters running overnight. I left the livestock in 5g buckets with small powerheads and a heater overnight while the sand settled and water cleared.

In the morning I acclimated all the livestock into the tank- and thats all. Be sure to monitor all of your parameters very closely. I got a tiny spike of ammonia and small water changes throughout the week and used a product called to Stability to get rid of it. Nitrates went up to 5 after that and had a small algae bloom but that passed by with another week or so. Now everything is as good as it was and no loss of any livestock :)

Will the livestock and corals be fine with just a power head in a buck or a rubbermaid bin for a night or two?

thank you guys for all your input.. feeling a little bit more comfortable in moving the tank
