Sourcing eco-responsible live rock

Hi there,

Just joined this forum and I'm actually only thinking about setting up a nano reef tank.

I've been keeping tropicals for a couple of years now and the tank I'm thinking of using (Aquanano 40 – 55 litres) is currently occupied by my male Betta.

I have no intention of parting with him, but once he passes, I would like to set up his tank a a nano reef.

I would like to do this in as environmentally friendly a way as possible, so I'd like to have tank bred fish (I'm guessing that limits me to ocellaris clowns?) and live rock that has been cultured rather than taken from the wild.

My problem is that, here in the UK, I can't find any stockists for cultured live rock. I've emailed several marine aquarium suppliers and none of them have got back to me.

So, I'm looking for advice on where to source good eco-friendly cultured rock in the UK and also on advice for tank inhabitants.

I hope someone can help.

Thanks

Well I am not sure on where in UK, but there are several companies in the US that make a clay based ceramic rock. For my last tank I had a friend make around 70 lbs of custom rock and it was truly amazing. I also got to design how I wanted the rock to look. So maybe that is an option for you!

As far as fish there is a wide variety of captive bred fish, check out ORA's website to get a clue.

OK, thanks. Just had a look and it doesn't seem that they post outside of the US.

I'll try to see if I can find something here in the Uk though.

Hi there,

Just a quick update. I've managed to find a shop near me that does seem to source their rock and livestock from ethical suppliers.

I've found their blog on Twitter and, after someone else on a UK forum kindly wrote to me, I've found out the questions I need to ask so that I can be sure that the fish have been captured and handled responsibly.

Your ORA suppliers look brilliant. I hope that things develop here in the UK to that standard (or maybe they already have – I'm very new and ignorant as I said earlier).

Thanks for all your help – I'll be back when I'm ready to go ahead and set up my nano. :)
