Tom_Ucf
Hey guys. Earlier today I heard a distinct pop sound come from my aquarium, and sure enough on the back glass there was a 6 inch crack that arced from the top of the tank to the side. I quickly drained everything and transferred the livestock to another tank with no losses so far. I had a fluvial 110 hob filter as a refugium on that tank, and I'm wondering if the weight of the filter could've led to the crack? Or maybe someone bumped the tank without me knowing and caused a micro fracture that later became a crack? For now I'm not putting that filter back on until I get some feedback from you guys. Admonition
I guess anything is possible but I know a lot of people use that filter without issues. How thin was your tank glass? Link to comment
afyounie
It could be that there was a chip on the edge of the glass under the plastic frame and the weight of the hob filter stressed it and caused the crack. If you decide to use the hob again, I'd add some support underneath so only some of its weight is on the glass wall. Link to comment
Mr. Clownfish
I had something like that happen to me in the past. I had the big duel bio wheel filter on the back of a 10 gallon tank and the pressure from the spot on the filter touching the glass caused it to crack. I was not as lucky as you were and I came home to a 10 gallon mess and dead fish. The best solution that I had at the time was to take a 6"x6" 1/4" sheet of plywood and help disperse the pressure evenly against the glass and not just in one central location. worked like a charm and never had another issue. Tom_Ucf
It's a standard Aqueon tank so 1/8" inch glass if I remember correctly. Maybe I just got unlucky with the tank... If I do put that filter back on, adding support under the filter to take stress off the tank sounds like a great idea! Link to comment
ps2cho
If it cannot hold the weight of a HOB then it's not good enough either way. Link to comment
PicoSavvy
I am always on the alert with those 10 gallon tank. The glass on my 1.8 gallon tank it thicker then a 10 gallon tank. If I where you I would replace it as soon as you can, you don't want to risk a flood or dead livestock Link to comment
Hammerstone
+1 sorry, that sucks. You don't want a catastrophic failure. Unfortunately, if I were you I'd consider it luck it's just a crack and not a blow out. It gives you some time to replace it. I think of it like a crack in a windshield. It starts like a little crack but it spreads. Link to comment
