Biocube 14 lighting

Hello.. New to the forum and semi new to reef keeping.

I am looking to upgrade the stock lighting of my biocube 14. It could be good retro or clamp on style.

My lfs guy said there was no mod upgrade to the stock hood and tried to sell me on two lights strips. One made by current for $180 and one made by AI for $280. A little more than I wanted to spend as a beginner. I plan to keep a couple of fish and beginner corals.

Any suggestions? And thank you!

Two lights I recommend that would work if you removed the lid.

Nanobox - made by a user on this site (Dave, this is your chance!), its very popular and a bulletproof light that offers alot for the money, he will custom make it for you down to every detail including color of housing

AI prime - WiFi control, tons of light for a 14 biocube, another very popular light

Kessil A160 - another great light, but you will need controller if you want it controlled

Leave on the lid and get the nanobox retro. You would be able to have any coral or clam under this lighting fixture

I make a RETRO for this tank that you can keep the hood. The kit is 95% finished and you simply mount it.

Drop me a PM or email.

I have been running my corelife biocube with stock lights with beginner corals. I have two fish and a large cuc. Other then battling GHA the stock lights have worked out just fine for me. Tank has been running since Oct 2014. Nice coral growth.

I did add two power-heads for more water movement and the skimmer that goes with the tank.

I still have no plans to upgrade any lights or for that matter get anything that needs better lights. So it can work depending on what you expect from your tank.

PS GHA appears to be turning white now.

I have stock lights in my BC 14 also and have good growth on frogspawn, gsp, acans, and asst. Soft coral. My reason to upgrade is not just to have more light demanding corals but to cut long term costs. Both lamps need to be replaced every. 7 to 10 months at about 16.99 each. Leds will cost much less to run because of power consumption. Last but not least BC fans have a reputation. For being loud. Upgrading to the. Nanobox retro will save money in the long run and give you total control of your lighting( sunrise sunsets multichannel etc.)

I have Dave's retro for my biocube 29 and love it. AND it was so easy to install, even I could do it.

Let's not forget the LED shimmer and awesome light color you get. You can fine tune your colors to get just the right amount of color pop to your taste.
