sna66
My goal with this mini reef is to make it look as natural as possible. From my eyes, I really like it, but I would like to know what others in the hobby think. none of my friends are in this hobby and most of them are mostly impressed by the hermit crabs.. see video: Link to comment
ReefWeeds
I like it! I like the flow and how the right top points away from the center. Most important is that you like it though. Who cares what anyone else thinks Link to comment

You should be proud. Do you have a build thread? I'd love to know some specs- gallons, age of tank, equi. in use, etc. Link to comment
NinjaReefer
I think you have a very nice tank. You should be proud of it. I think it looks very natural. Because you asked, my only minor nitpick is the epoxy you can see. Its the only thing that breaks the illusion of a natural reef. I think it is because of the smooth texture. Maybe you could glue some small rubble rocks or zoa frags on top of it... Time will help too. A trick I learned to make a reef look more natural is instead of having 1 specimen of 30 different types of coral, have less variety and groupings of the same type of coral or repeat that coral throughout the tank. I really do like your tank. I like the rocks and coral placement and how you left room for an open sandbed. Link to comment
sna66
Thanks guys, I had a build thread years ago, but seems to have been deleted. its a biocube 14 without the top and the rim with the biocube stand, lighting is AI nano the original, i have an auto top off, with RO water, weekly 1 gal water changes, run chemi blue and the white one - i forget name in the rear in one of those drop in chamber things. i dump in b-ionic about everyday, last week i picked up a cobalt 75 watt heater and jaebo wavemaker from amazon and I am super happy with them. I have many soft corals, a gold stripe maroon clown with a bubble tip anemone, everything seems happy with this setup. Thanks ninja, i really wanted to go from a minimal look, maybe using less rock, like a bonsai type reef. Yes - I'm glad you mentioned the epoxy as this was my main concern, I'm hoping once the coralline takes over and the gsp starts growing it will blend in, and that's a great suggestion about the rubble. LongDoggy
I dig it. Nice biocube14. I love the tank, but sometimes feel frustration with the size. I like how your rimless setup looks too. I thought about doing this, but I build a RapidLED kit into the stock hood. It is not a very sexy unit if outside the hood so converting for me may not make much sense. Link to comment
Nanofreak79
Looks good and clean as well. Is it still fairly new? The more things grow in and take hold you'll notice an even more accurate little piece of the reef. Good job! Link to comment

The size can be difficult to work with, I think its best to start with a little bit of live rock. I used to have big pieces and it was a pain. I prefer the rimless look, i think it looks more modern, reminds me of my dream tank - elos. Looks good and clean as well. Is it still fairly new? The tank has been running for about 4 years, did a recent refresh in April (complete tear down and rebuild) Link to comment

The tank has been running for about 4 years, did a recent refresh in April (complete tear down and rebuild) Oh yea for sure. I'd love an elos! One day... I'd totally love to go rimless. The 14 can definitely be hard to work with. Besides space, I find that the height of the tank, and the obstructing lid block a lot of viewing area when your standing. And even sitting I need to slouch down to see the whole thing. Rimless would give the full viewing area and allow more scape potential by leveraging the top and back wall space. It's just that RapidLED kit. It's not made to be outside the hood. I'd have to fabricate some type of enclosure and hangar. Not to mention I've got fish that like to jump. Probably not the ideal setup to go rimless at the moment. Oh well. Got to wait till I get the elos Link to comment

I was thinking about this before removing the rim at one point but not sure how to make it look good.. maybe a square frame made from 2x4 wood under the stand Link to comment

Figured I'd have to make a stand/platform of some sort and pair it black or wood stained to match my hard wood floors. Figured I had to raise it like 6-12 inches. Still an open option for me. Glad to hear in by the only one with this frustration and remedy idea. Link to comment
