gkarris
Looking online - I'm getting into low-tech pico tanks people make from vases and glass containers! If you have one, post it here. You can also have questions asked and answered here as well! You got one? Here's mine - my 2 cup SW reef pico (posted here - still going!), my Walstad FW I set up today (middle), and a 4 cup SW pico (right) I set up a last week going down from a 0.7 Gal cube (which before that was a FW). The SW Pico's are just an airstone - hence the "Low Tech". Link to comment
gkarris
Traded frags on the 2 cup with one in the vase.I am intrigued by the PJ Reefs jar so I made my own self enclosed jar from the small one. Running a week so far... Link to comment
AnthonyJ
These are incredibly interesting, I've done a few smaller, enclosed jars with freshwater and shrimp, and they were perfectly fine. I'm interested to see how these do in SW. Link to comment
gkarris
It should be fine. This one is only half the size of the PJ Reefs jar yet the bioload for the given size is smaller... Link to comment
brandon429
Just to toss in a different one its a fw micro but still low tech. I don't touch it for weeks Since the gas system is API test tubes to hold co2 it hasn't let me consider it high tech yet lol Sealed w lid no evap Pressure co2 paintball Blue neos Half gallon full exactly like avatar pic <----------- Drone monitor LCD in stand No circulation no heating gla ferts https://imageshack.com/i/idB1KzMKj Would someone repost that big for me in the thread my ipad browser won't bring up the right tools it always just does a link. Airstone lines are still used in low tech setups, but mine run co2 into the sealed tank instead of air. No pumps or heaters or motion for this tank Gkarris I like how you have three in a row like that Link to comment

gkarris
added another zoas frag to the enclosed jar and put some trigger pods in. also got a frag for my vase - will post pics later.... anyone else got a cool low/no tech pico? Link to comment
chemikalzsky
Those are pretty awesome! Hownoften do you do water changes and what light are you using? I have a. 5 gallon bowl that I started a couple of months ago. I started a thread about it here http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/363152-5-gallon-bowl-mini-reef/ Link to comment

I have a. 5 gallon bowl that I started a couple of months ago. I started a thread about it here http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/363152-5-gallon-bowl-mini-reef/ I do a 1/3 - 1/2 change once a week. On the jar I use just a Coral Life 50/50 Compact Fluorescent I got a long time ago and a desklamp from Target. I guess it is still being sold at Petco. On the vase I use a cheap LED White/Blue from eBay and a nicer desk lamp from Target. I'm just on a tight budget. I was wondering what you are using for your bowl - looks like a nicer reef light as I was wondering how you are sustaining that much livestock with no tech... Link to comment
chemikalzsky
It took me a while to find a light that would work. I used a really really crappy LED light for a short time, but knew I needed a better one if I was going to add more to the bowl. Link to comment
gkarris
I got some algae from a local saltwater fish store - was gonna use it on a small low-tech tank, but decided not too. Instead of throwing it away I just put it in a vase with saltwater and underneath the light. 2 weeks so far and it is growing.Well, I found a cool vase at the resale shop, added some decoration and a bit of sand in the bottom, bubbler, and came up with this: Maybe add small frag from another jar... gkarris
My 50/50 cfl died, rather than replace it I used an LED lamp from IKEA that FW Walstad owners love so much as it is a full-sprectrum (bought a few when they were on sale for $7). Zoas seem to pop open more now... Anyone else with no/low tech? Link to comment
patback
I had a glass bowl with Saran Wrap for a few months with a Zola frag and aiptasia next to a window. No water changes, no topping off, nothing. I'll see if I can find the thread. Apparently I posted it before the new site format and it won't show up in my recent topics. It's out there somewhere but have no idea what I named the title or even what sub I posted it in. My pico now isn't exactly low tech. Nano-box, redundant controlled heater on a rkl, mp10, etc. if I could find small enough float switches my ato would be set up on it also. Link to comment
KyleAwesome
Here is my 1 gallon jar. Water movement is provided by a small airpump. I have a few zoas and palys, a xenia frag and a single ric. Two decent size hermit crabs and a cerith snail. I've been trying to find another mushroom or two but havent seen any locally. This is after a water change so some of the inhabitants are a upset. gkarris
That's a beautiful jar! Looks very, very, natural. What do you use for the lighting? Here is my 1 gallon jar. KyleAwesome
That's a beautiful jar! Looks very, very, natural. What do you use for the lighting? Thanks! Right now I'm running an IM Skkye Light 8w LED fixture. Dual channel with 4 whites and 4 blues. I'm thinking of switching it out with something else as I've been battling some GHA for the past few weeks. Given theres no feeding, it has it be due to the photoperiod. I was running the blues from 8am to 9pm with the whites coming on from 9am to 7pm. I changed it to blues on at 9am till 11:30am, whites on at 11am till 7:30pm, blues back on from 5pm till 8pm. Hoping that will help cut down on the GHA. We'll see... Link to comment
CrazyEyes
Although mine isn't a jar, it's low tech and is definitely staying that way. Aqueon 4g. Link to comment
gkarris
So I got a suprising really nice $10 frag and put it in that vase (took the decoration out as I want to emphasize the nice frag). A couple of little stars showed up too (1 pictured but now there's 2)! Link to comment
