truepercs
I see a few folks have used the mp10 on small nanos. I want to house sps in my nano however i do like a clean look and as you know space is limited. Has anyone set up the mp10 on the inside of sump/filtration area.I am going to mock something in an old sump dividing it similar to size of the nano tank including filter area. Then drill a large hole so that the mp10 sends water through the hole to see how The water flowsSince the propeller is slightly shorter than the enclosed filter area.i could even run a small piece of pvc type tube/pipe to help guide the water flow.this would hide the pump keeping the clean look. Anyone done something similar?I do not want to stick it on the side or the front of the glass and do not want a constant flow.comments? Link to comment
truepercs
I did some prototyping… maybe a few pictures may produce a few comments. I think it will work. I first tested the flow of the MP10's to see if it could even be used in the small nano. I think that it can be dialed down enough to work. I grabbed a piece of material to give the drilling a test. may be difficult to reach with such a small area I practiced with a flexible tool. Without much pressure and I was able to drill through fairly easy. I looked at the hardware for something to take up the small gap. I want to make sure most water comes through the chambers rather than pulling directly from tank area. Notice the item I found in plumbing, I was able to remove clamp and cut down to size. I think I may remove water in tank and give this a go... I'll wait to see if there are any comments just in case someone has a suggestion that may be helpful. The last thing I want to do is screw up a new tank. This placement will allow for me to utilize all of the in tank space while hiding the mp10 power head keeping the clean look. Wet side will tuck in nicely behind the back wall, dry side outside which hides wiring and pump itself. example Just have to drill in actual tank now. 20150427_121738_resized_1 by nikon_equipped, on Flickr Ha...figured it out after linking images. jaynkeel
The good old rubber fernco connector, a million and one uses and counting!! This looks interesting will follow. Link to comment
truepercs
Well it was a success… A bit difficult to drill, I used a flexible extension and could just barely make it. I never owned one of these Vortech pumps before, it does make a little more noise than the previous power heads I have owned. This may be due to running it at slower speeds? I have plenty of water movement in this tank… My pump set up is sweet. Looks like a turbine engine is set in the filter chambers I need to plug the original hole to make sure the water follows the correct filter chamber path. I took the sponge out and placed above the pump right now, I still need to experiment regarding the water flow. And… I need to read the manual to learn of the flow options on this pump. Once the water clears up I can post a picture on what it looks like. Link to comment
truepercs
Here is a picture that will give you an idea… Rather than having a large pump in the tank, this mounting method leaves the tank available and only shows a large hole in back wall. I may remove and clean up the rubber so the cut is smoother to make it look a little better. The photo makes the rock pile look like a large cow pie. Link to comment
truepercs
I figured out what the noise was I had to adjust the rubber grommet i made, it was causing the pump to vibrate. Link to comment
truepercs
Last photo, with lights off and tank clear, Happy with results. Now to figure which light I will be using. Link to comment

truepercs
Nanobox tide is on and a few corals are in. Still waiting on my cobalt heater to come in, want to keep a clean look. About 5/6 weeks old now. I added California tort first. I figured if I can't keep the sps I wasn't going to move forward adding anything more. Doing alright... Pic update: (I added a birds nest, and moved a couple things since this photo) Link to comment

truepercs
Here are a couple of photos with my phone… Not as much color as I would like but It will take time. I added a pretty nice piece of equipment ( Kore 5th doser) which will be good to use when I upgrade to a larger tank. For now i have been dosing to keep the water topped will be used for 2 part additives. Going to experiment with the auto water change soon. Should be no problem for such a small tank. Nice that I do not have to ask my wife of daughter to add water to tank if I am away. Link to comment
truepercs
Wow just seen tiny reef's tanks and was inspired! I had my own bumps and lost the initial coral and fish but I think I have some of the bugs worked out and have provided a more stable system. i recently set up the doser for a flow of automatic small water changes throughout the day. I think I have learned a few things along the way. I should be able add a few more inhabitants and coral now that it is a stable system. SPS are showing growth! I wish the rockscape was a bit nicer however I end up doing more damage due to the limited room to work. I am just going to exercise patience and let the tank grow out before trying to change the rockscape. In the next coming months I will add a few more colorful sps, Hopefully the brown frags purchased will color up if not I may have to remove and replace. I think attention really needs to be paid on coral placement with such a small tank. i will keep hands out of tank for a while and focus on hiding tubes,etc... Link to comment
truepercs
Ha... I thought this little fellow was long gone, happy to see that it was only a molt. Been two months since I had seen it. Took this photo with phone... Ran up to get DSLR and it was already back into the rock work... Well it is still alive, and well! Link to comment

Its really interesting to see what you're doing with this tank, especially the MP-10 through the back wall and the automated water changes. I think it looks great! I agree - coral placement is a huge deal...although I have learned that as long as your corals are healthy and growing, you can make up for almost any mistake in placement by moving things around later. Kind of like transplanting plants in the garden Don't give up on brown SPS - you just need to correct the conditions that are making them brown out. Otherwise any new SPS you get will probably just turn brown too. Typically brown out happens due to too much nitrates or phosphates. Ha... truepercs
Moved a few items around... I want to move the hammer a bit lower to the right. Also would like to get about 3 more SPS AFTER THAT.... done buying coral for a while. looking at sets monti, superman encrusting monti and possibly a blue stylo or pocillipora something with a deep coloring. My favorite is an "oregon tort" however it sounds like it may be challenging for a nano tank. Going to try to post a photo monthly. Birds of paradise is very colorful from top, polyps REALLY extend hiding base color from any other view. Parameters have been stable. Alk has been at 11dk however from reading and testing the reef crystals seem to be high out of the bag. I went from IO to reef crystals to limit dosing since I do automatic small water changes. I may change salt next bag to try another brand. Link to comment

truepercs
Thanks! Both hammer and candy cane now have two heads!, (Which I think I should move the candy also) I cracked the spongodes when moving so I actually had to glue two pieces. The skeleton exposed is almost covered with polyps. Another week and you will never know it was damaged. I can't believe how long all the polyps are extending on the montis and birds nests... The more I look at it I think I should raise the rock work up another inch or two. Doing this would help me in placement of the coral. If I wait long enough maybe everything will just fuse together then I can just take the whole lump out. That would be much easier to work on placement I am very happy with the way things are progressing, I am seeing some growth with all of the items placed in the tank! I think I had a hitch hiker torch growing but now that I moved the rocks a bit I don't know where it is... Maybe next move it will show up. Link to comment
