Juuls
Thank you for your advise. I caught it (and it's friends). It took this long to get enough courage and I still shrieked when they came running out, my poor hubby came running to the bathroom to see if I was okay. JavaJacketOC it was not supposed to rush out that quickly LOL Previous post I'm a bit sad I lost one fish, snail and now my cleaner shrimp. The night after I lost my fish I noticed a big chunky brown rock crab (at least that is the best look alike picture I have found). I think I know which rock it is hiding in now thanks to my poor cleaner shrimp, his striking colour can be seen lying on it's side close to the hole the crab went into.I have been using a glass and shrimp the past few nights but he seems to have enough inverts and fish to feed on I'm going to take the rock out tomorrow as it is late now and try and get him out, I hope that is his home, but I'm still sad about my shrimp I have never seen it lie on it's side in a hole llike that for so long so something must have got him.If anyone has any idea how to get this thing out please let me know as any advise would be appreciated. ajmckay
Bummer dude. I vote some midnight reconnaisance. If you have a red flashlight and a net you might be able to spot it at night if it's a small tank. Otherwise if the crab trap isn't working for you it might mean taking out the rock and putting it in a bucket until the crab comes out and you can catch it. Link to comment
Juuls
thank you ajmckay, I'm going to try and take out the rock tomorrow, hope it yields results, I'm 80% certain he normally returns to that rock in the morning. There will be no more inverts until he's gone. Link to comment

I've been dealing with crab hitchhikers myself, however, luckily I've only lost snails so far - but my crabs are pretty small. I finally caught one today, but the scary white fuzzy one with red eyes is still at large. The one I caught today would drag the skunk cleaner molts into his hidey hole every time one of them would molt. I'd see the molt sticking out of the hole and crab claws dragging it in. I'm so sorry about your cleaner, fish and snails. I finally caught mine with a mantis trap, but not sure if those are too small for your guy. Link to comment

Juuls
I have the rock I thought it was in now contained in a bucket of the old water, with a pump and heater, because although I'm terrified of it I don't want to kill it. Anyway I have offended the corals scooting them around and balancing the rocks back up. However there is an ominous looking thing in one of the rocks... which typically happens to be propping up two other rocks! My executive decision is to have a rum and coke then go back and try to figure out if this rock holds a crab or not, and if it does I'll tear the tank down again. Link to comment
JavaJacketOC
Try dipping the rock in RO water...the crab will probably try and vacate the rock after a couple minutes Link to comment
Juuls
thank you okay I will will the rock be okay? I still have a lot of rock in the tank but would like to be able to put it back in as well. Link to comment

The rock will probably be fine..you'll probably have some bacteria die off from the brief dip but it shouldn't be detrimental. Link to comment

Juuls
this strange thing, I think it may be one of the clam type things (the dark bit in the photo) Disclaimer,,,,, I am a terrible photographer before the rum and coke, so it's got worse I'm also British so ...'sorry' The rock will probably be fine..you'll probably have some bacteria die off from the brief dip but it shouldn't be detrimental. Oh great news, I'll top up my drink and dip the rock thank you... although I fear I will run and scream like a girl if/when it does come out! I guess that is what the hubby is for Link to comment

arashsheikhpoor
matbe keep the rock ouy of water for 10 -15 min or so and it might come out? I kinda did the same thing, except i shook the rock a bit until the crab was shaken out. Link to comment
Juuls
Oh well I own a crab (that I am scared of) that lives in a rock in a bucket with a heater and pump and gets water top ups/changes... he scurries into his rock when anyone goes near his bucket. I must get some more rock for my tank and a tank for this terror who will not vacate the property Link to comment

Juuls
he still lives in a dymax IQ3, I'm terrified of him but couldn't have him killed Link to comment
cromag27
You're scared of a crab? did I read that correctly? lol. Link to comment
amphipod
My best crab is one that looks almost like first pic lol, I have some goby and a few other crabs living with him, crab likes to get food straight from tweezers lol. He manages to eat just about everything green in the tank, and of course there is no snails or worms in his tank, I wouldn't recommend very many species of crab in the reef tank, they deserve COWLR, Crabs Only With Live Rock in my honest opinion. Good thing you didn't kill crabby Link to comment
Juuls
terrified of him, but he still lives in his own IQ5 tank in the spare bathroom, he gets water changes when I clean the main tank and feed twice a week. He has his own rock and some algae to keep him company. He appears to have eaten the worm, other crab and random shelled snail type creature which cohabited with him for a short while. HarryPotter
Honestly I have a huge coral banded shrimp that is ridiculously aggressive- tries to jump out and claw my hand whenever I am doing something in the tank, Not "terrified" of it, but don't have the courage to remove it either! Link to comment
Sunstar
I had a big red-eyed decepticrab... not sure what it was. rather cute. And I had a strawberry crab hike in too. Also a mantis shrimp. I miss those days. Link to comment
