Opinions on my live rock scaping?

I wanted to get some opinions on my live rock scaping before I add in corals. I'm going coral shopping for my birthday and don't want to move everything around later. Thank you!

Like it, though seems a little too "stacked" IMO. Also the rocks take up a lot of real estate on the sand bed. Initially we like to make the tank look "full" with rock. But really it shouldn't IMO. The fullness comes when adding corals - depending on what kind you want. Soft corals which beginners typically like grow big really quick.

So even though you have all those rocks I would say take out the pieces on the sand bed. I think a cluttered sand bed makes a tank look kinda cluttered. Plus eventually I'm sure there will be some corals you will want to put on the sand bed.

Damn, I'll upload the bigger image later for some reason my browser isn't letting me upload images through the nanoreef uploader so this smaller photobucket will have to do.

Good luck getting corals! What are you thinking of getting?

Thank you so much for the advice!

Candycane, frogspawn, zoa, acro, monti capricornus, kenya tree.

All of them are really small but like my favorite part of my freshwater discus tank has been watching them grow so I would like to do the same with the reef.

Oh and the rock you put the X on. Before I read your reply I took out that chunk because that 4 in+ monster of a bristleworm was creepin through it. I don't have a problem with bristleworms but that guy was too big imo.

I'd take it all out smash it into fragments then glue it together into a more interesting scape. With no dead-spots.

GAAAH I am really not good at this....

Yeah IMO the hardest part of scaping is trying to get away from that "stacked rocks" look. Honestly it's just something that evolves over time though and your first scape definitely won't be your last.

It's not like you can find a scape you like and directly copy it though because so much is dependent on your individual rocks - that being said don't be afraid to modify your rocks as you see fit. Also don't feel the need to use all of your rocks - even though you pay so much for them! You could always stash them away or sell them if need be.

I still think you're putting too much emphasis on an "arch" or "cave" too much... as a result it just looks too stacked. Turn things over and think of how stony corals grow in nature. They originate at a point and "branch out". So think more in terms of cliffs and overhangs than caves and arches.

I mean whatever you do just just be sure you like it - I suppose that's what matters most. It's not always about the natural look.
