Hi to all,

I need help about my gorgonian coral. I bought it a few days ago. It wasn't with rock so I just buried it to the sand. Today I realised some part of it gone to be whitish. So was it be bleaching or it's growing? I thought it was bleaching unfortunately but I wanted to ask you and take your opinions and your suggestions. I circled whitish part with black at pictures. How can i feed it daily? I am very new about feeding corals and It is not like LPS, there is no polyp or something to put little shrimp piece around its mouth :)

Also I am sharing my tank's picture. Can you help me about location of the gorgonian with looking wave motors? I searched it some websites said that it needs modarate flow, some of said high flow. So can you suggest me a good area for it at my tank?

Thank you all for your help.

My water conditions;

Salinity 1,024

Temperature 26 C

Nitrate 1-5ppm

kH 8

Ca 400

Mg 1300

Friendly Regards,

It needs moderate flow and doesn't need light. target feed it phytoplankton twice a day with a turkey baster. The "blueberries" are its polyps.

The white parts in your pictures, look dead.

This is a very hard coral to keep, start looking up care instructions online and good luck!!!

Thank you for your answer. So I will take it the rock behind of it, close to the wave motor. also it is the dark spot of the tank. Light doesnt go there much.

I have "invertablate food from ocean nutrition". can i dissolve it with a small amount of water and then can i feed with turkey baster through the gorgonian? Will it work? Will it help to bring back to death part?

Thank you again.

Blueberry gorgonions should be fed 4x or more a day, and are practically impossible to keep alive if you don't have a dedicated NPS (non-photosynthetic) tank with an automatic feeder and powerfull filtration to keep up with the nutrients. Even then very few have long term success with blueberry gorgonians. It's unfortunate they are so frequently sold at LFS in the first place.

It is always a good idea to research livestock to make sure you can take care of it before purchasing. No worries though we've all been there and it's just a part of this hobby.

You are right. Unfortunately I just bought it without research :/ It is my fault and now I want to keep it alive as much as I can.. Thank you for your kindly reply.

Try feeding it fauna marin foods as often as possible, also make sure you keep it in the dark as algae will grow on the skeleton very quickly killing the coral (I suggest you frag of the dead parts as well). Do keep track of your NO3 and PO4 as you don't want to over feed your tank/harm your other fish and corals.

Good luck!

They are beautiful and fascinating. I tried them along with a yellow finger gorgonian when I was new and learning because I thought they were so unique and still do. However, unless you have a system designed for continual plankton population they will eventually parish. Having them in moderate to high light also allows algae to start growing on them which will speed up the process of their decline. You would be better off if you returned the gorgonian and purchased something that will thrive in your tanks conditions.

Thank you for your reply. I thought to give it back but the shop is far and I don't think that they will take back. Because it is totally my fault to buy it without a deep research :(

Hi,

I began to feed it daily with invertebrate food from "ocean nutrition". I just cut little piece of it and solve it with less water, then feed on it with syringe (without needle of course :) ). Do you have any suggestion about feeding ways? I didnt cut the dead parts yet but i will do it.

Ocean nutrition will likely be way to large, I really suggest FM as it the only food specifically designed for azoox gorgonians. It is also a dry powder so it can be automatically fed with an inexpensive automatic fish food feeder in the future. Claude Schuhmacher reported success propagating blue berry gorgonian using FM foods, but he is associated with Fauna Marin so take that as you will. I'm pretty sure Kevin Kohen from LiveAquaria Divers Den has also been able to keep the blue berry gorgonian alive using FM foods, but he uses others foods such as phytplankton as well (which ones specifically I'm not sure you can probably find it somewhere online)

Either feed it with a syringe, or just add it to the tank. Do not place a bottle or the like around the coral, as it seems NPS have optimal flow rates for feeding (that is Dendronepthya do, but I think is logical others do as well).
