Jackal_Knight Posted March 6, 2015 Share Posted March 6, 2015 I came home from a long day at work, only to find all the pumps on my tank off, I check my reef keeper and its missing the pc4 I have all my pumps on, so I go the the pc4 to see what's going on. I notice it is off... Weird so I click it back on, all my pumps start no problem then I hear a sparking noise. I take a look in the sump and my heater is shorting out in the water. I turn everything off again and pull the heater out. The bottom of it is broken. I have no idea how this could of happened. The glass heaters are fairly thick glass. I know I've dropped the cheap hydro I keep around for mixing water for my water changes half a dozen time and it just bounces off my tile floor. The jager I've never dropped it came out of a box and straight to the tank. My coral have looked all pissed off the rest of the day I hope everything make it ok. So how many of you have experiencenced anything like this? Link to comment
Benny314 Posted March 6, 2015 Share Posted March 6, 2015 Heaters like all electrical componets break down over time, some times quicker if they're heavy use etc. Removing heaters from the water while they're still on/hot is the normal cause for heaters to explode/pop. If it's still inside a year (or what ever the warrenty is) make a claim. Link to comment

HM3105 Posted March 6, 2015 Share Posted March 6, 2015 I'm not sure I have anything to add about why they break but I have heard that having excess calcium and other junk on the glass tube around the heating element can lead to the premature failure. I personally try to keep mine cleanish for that reason. Link to comment

I personally try to keep mine cleanish for that reason. If that's true, that might of been the reason why since mine was kinda nasty looking . Well all my spa looks dead, and the LPs sent looking much better Link to comment

akma Posted March 6, 2015 Share Posted March 6, 2015 I popped my heater the other day. Thank god my tank is cyclIng. if I were you I would do a few sizable water changes along with running carbon and poly pads just in case any metal were leaching inside. Link to comment
