Can a 21g tank with just powerheads work out?

Partially Submerged

I bought a very nice 20x20x12 acrylic tank (21 gallons) that I had planned as a project tank for the basement (mainly macroalgae and some interesting critters). My plan was to run it with two AC 70s or one and a strong powerhead.

Now I'm realizing that this tank might be a wee bit nice to be in a basement. In fact, there is this little voice telling me that I should get a stand, a Kessil, and a giant amount of very expensive corals and put it up in my office. ;) At this point, I have enough willpower to ignore those voices, but just in case I fail, I'd like to know my options.

The problem is the tank has no overflow and is not drilled for a sump. If I make this a display tank, AC 70s are too ugly, so I am wondering if I could get away with just water changes and powerheads. Could I? I know it works for smaller tanks, but it's much easier to do large weekly water changes. I have no idea if the same would still work in a larger tank.

Sure, it'd work fine if you cycle and clean your rock well and stock correctly.

The best part about acrylic tho is that it's super easy to drill :D

Good point. :D I might just start the tank the way I had planned and eventually drill it when I want to convert it into a display tank.

Drill and sump it, it'll be nicer and healthier that way. Powerheads alone COULD work but it wouldn't be the best option. You'd have more problems than it was worth in the long run.

Well, there seems to be no consensus, all options on the table. There is only one solution: I need three new tanks - one with sump, one with canister, and one just with powerheads - and put them all in my office, claiming major tax deductions. Gotta go and talk to my wife. ;)
