Hey guys, I've been thinking about a really cool nano reef setup for awhile now and I wanted to get some advice on my proposed setup.

There's a really, really damn cool Petco 6.25g mini bowfront style tank that I want to run as a nano reef. It has a refugium that is about .7 of a gallon. It comes with a small powerhead and a 3watt light (which I'll be upgrading when i start to mess with coral. I want to overfiltrate and keep my maintenance low.

So in a nutshell, my finished setup will hopefully involve:

6.25 gallon tank w/ .7 gallon refugium w/ 3 stage filtration

fluval sea nano light

9 watt green killing machine UV sterilizer w/ built in powerhead

and a nano protein skimmer (model not yet decided)

I'd really appreciate comments and help on getting all set up

I would highly recommend a better light, those fluvals left shrooms reaching for light directly under them in a 10g tank, the color they put out was pretty bland too IMHO. I would also skip the uv sterilizer, but that's just me.

There are to many options to list, and it really depends on your budget. On the cheaper end a par30/38 from coral compulsion would be nice and easy, on the other end of the scale Dave at nanobox makes some of the cleanest/nicest lighting systems out there.

We have a 5 gallon Spec V tank for my son. I put a 12" wavepoint led over it almost a year ago. the light has grown mushrooms, candy cane coral, and zoas. Very inexpensive and effective just not controllable or dimmable.

I also agree that a UV sterilizer isn't needed. The key to a successful small nano is weekly water changes. A gallon or even two every week will keep everything happy and flourishing. Let the tank cycle good and add livestock/ make changes very slowly and you will have a successful thriving reef.
