Waterhobit
Well, I finally added another fish, a little tank-raised ocellaris! Unfortunately I keep having to beg my wife not to call it a "nemo fish." He has been in since Saturday, and my water is still testing perfect. Also new this weekend is the arrival of my skimmer. I knew that I wanted to use a skimmer even though others with this size tank have gotten away without having one, but I did not want too large of a skimmer that might over-skim. I understand that that is apparently a thing. So, I ended up ordering a Macro Aqua M-30 which is a Hang on Skimmer designed for nano-reefs. This is all pretty new to me, but I believe I have it set up correctly as I can see bubbles breaking in the opening, (neck maybe?) of the collection cup. I'm not getting any froth running over yet, but I'm thinking that may be due to it being a new tank with a currently low bio-load. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Here is a picture, although it is not the best. Finally, I was hoping that someone could identify the white thing growing on my rock. Link to comment
Waterhobit
Ok, so the last three days my ammonia and nitrite have been at 0. So yesterday I picked up a mushroom that I snagged off a random rock at my LFS. And today I picked up a couple more frags and exchanged the molly I've had for a six-line wrasse. I'm really starting to enjoy this tank! Also I realized that the reef-cleaners package I ordered was supposed to have included nassarius snails that I had not received. A quick email, and now they will be sending them on Monday. Also tomorrow is pay day, and I'm going to do my best not to blow too much of it on frags. Anyway, a picture is worth a thousand words so here they come. 1st coral in the tank! Frogspawn, staying pissed... And another mushroom, lost a lot of color when he was added. I aught to take a picture tomorrow of the full colony he came from. And finally, here's the clown with the six-line. They seem to get along great. The six-line was very timid at first while he adjusted to the tank and explored the rock crevices and caves. He has been impossible to get a good picture of because when he does come out he moves too fast. This is the best I could get. He is fascinating to watch. I didn't realize you could see their eyes rotating and turning. Well enough typing it's time to watch the tank some more. Link to comment
Waterhobit
Ok, I got a lot of pictures this time to show. After adding the Six-Line yesterday and removing the molly, I decided to go ahead and add the Firefish I wanted immediately. This way, I am adding him before the Six-Line has a chance to become territorial, and while the clown is still adjusting to the Six-Line. The three of them are frequently hanging out together, when the Firefish is not hiding in the barnacle that he has chosen as his home. Here is the new fellow in his chosen home! He says "Hello!" Incidentally, the Six-Line seems to have chosen a home as well Frogspawn is opening up! Blue-spot mushroom seems to me to be moving. Anybody have an opinion on this? Acclimation process! Pictures of fish hanging out. This corner seems to be the popular corner. The firefish stays close to his home and the clown hangs out for the company. I do see the clown checking out the frogspawn occasionally. It makes me wonder if he is considering hosting it even though its still quite small. Parameters all still look great. I will be headed to an LFS tomorrow that is a little ways away and I rarely get to visit, but I know that they have something the other two options don't, a 10$, and 20$ frag racks! And today was payday! I'm taking my wife with me though to make sure that I don't spend my rent money too. Link to comment
righttirefire
Awesome build. Good luck. I set a weekly $40 allowance for my LFS. I spent 17 yesterday and traded in some chaeto and 5 dollar bill for some rubble rock and a little colony of zoas. Link to comment
andiok
very nice tank. you would probably need some mesh for the top as the firefish are jumpers. Link to comment
righttirefire
Due to my lease agreement I'm required to keep a "sealed" top on my aquarium. I actually like it. Being a mild climate I don't think I'll overheat come summer time. And my ac50 pumps enough air into my water IMO. It keeps evaporation down. I had glass cut so my leds would be cut in half by the hinge. Link to comment
Sk8n Reefer
Good luck on the build- nice shaped tank and scape ?. How's that piece a few pics up with the circle- to me it appears to be a type of encrusting montipora - hard to tell from that pic. any update pics of it? Does it get plenty of light? Link to comment
Waterhobit
Thanks, The mystery encrusting thing is still there, and yes it gets plenty of light. As far as keeping a lid goes, I really did not want to use a screen top with this tank for visual reasons. Instead I was able to get solid glass lid that sits flush with the rim of the tank, and I am pretty happy with the look. I'll have to take some pictures with it on to show what I am talking about. Waterhobit
Well, I got several new frags today, and I finally snapped a picture of the colony of mushrooms as I promised. So here are my new additions: SMALL Torch Yellow Polyps Green Toadstool Leather I believe these are Pink Mushrooms but I suppose they could be bleached. Either way, I like them. I'm not sure on these. I initially thought that the branching one was a leather, but both are SPS corals. I have them high in the tank under good flow. The price was good, and they were on sale today only. Perhaps someone could give me a better idea what they are and how to care for them. Edit: Toadstool has extended itself! Link to comment
Waterhobit
I think I got a tiny feather duster! Link to comment
Waterhobit
Picked up a few new frags tonight. It was buy 2 get 1 free and I couldn't walk away. Purple Devil's Hand (Photobombed!) Blue and Orange Acans Small Blue Rics Link to comment
pewpewkittah
Beautiful tanks. I love your crypts in the larger tank. I still have a few planted tanks, even a 12g long! It's such a unique dimension. Link to comment
Waterhobit
Well, I told myself I wasn't going to spend anymore for a while, but then I stopped at the LFS to kill some time, and they had a little yellow clown goby that looked like it desperately needed food, and he was only 12 dollars. And I got a 10$ mushroom. It's hard to tell from the pictures but his belly is a little shrunken, but he has been eating voraciously since I added him. He attacks frozen foods, but doesn't seem to even notice pellets. I imagine this is why he looks so famished. I don't think my LFS feeds frozen foods unless it is rarely. Hopefully he does well in his new home. And here are the mushroom: Also this little dark thing came with the mushroom. I have no clue what it is but it has a slimy feeling. Does anybody have any ideas what it is? Also I removed the mushroom and rubber banded it to the rock I want it to grow on. I'm hoping it will take off. Plus it looks like I may have it growing back again on the original frag. This would let me sell it back to the LFS once it's back Link to comment
