Starting new Fluval Spec V - Looking at Orbit Marine LED Setup

Hey there,

Finally picked up a new Fluval Spec V last night ($40 Steal!) and I'm slowly in the process of getting all the gear together for converting it into a reef tank. I'm looking at replacing the lighting currently and have been watching a ton of reviews and videos on the Current USA Orbit Marine system as it has some really neat features. Here's the link:

I've seen some YouTube videos on this light on an actual Fluval Spec, and they've said it works great! Here's the video for that:

What are your thoughts on getting this over something like a PAR38 from coral compulsion?

Thanks!

Cswan has an Orbit - looks awesome. Honestly, I kinda wish I had one sometimes to be able to control it a bit better.

Right now I have a Par38 and it's pretty good but has ALOT of "overflow" light going everywhere.

Yeah the overflow light kinda bothers me. Especially living in an apartment.. and since this will be in the living room, it'll be kind of annoying having a whole area lit up from a PAR38 or nanobox.

That looks like a very cool little light! Right now we are using a Wavepoint on our Spec V which works fine for soft coral and some LPS but the functionality and low profile of this light for that price seems perfect for the Spec V. I just added it to my Amazon wish list. :)

That should do well on a spec V. I have it on a 10G and everything looks great, and love the control you get. Even considering the bigger version for a 36"x14"x13" tank.

I've tried two other led lighting options on the fluval spec v including a maxspect razor nano and I must say that the orbit marine led is the best so far. It really illuminates the tank from one end to the other leaving no dark spots. Its really low profile sitting on top of the tank, giving a very sleek look. Most videos on youtube and pictures can't really compare to how the orbit marine led's color looks in real life, not to mention they usually don't show you how it looks from mixing the white and blue channels to your liking. It looks amazing on a shallow tank like the spec v.

I hesitated for several months before purchasing the fixture on amazon...and I'm sorta glad I did because it went from from ~$136 to ~106 with amazon prime lol, but I was extremely satisfied when I turned the light on and started mixing the colors. The built in timer, dawn-dusk, and different modes to play with are a good plus.

Softies and LPS are good with this fixture, you may be able to do sps near the top, but I don't plan on keeping sps in the spec v so I can't give you any insight on that lol. Highly recommend this fixture if you're into soft corals and lps, best bang for your buck!

I have the same light over my tank. I love it! Its a perfect fit and it gets the job done for my needs. I was able to keep LPS Softies and some easier SPS under it without any problems. My only complaint is that it doesnt have any UV or other color LEDs integrated.

I have more details and pics posted in my thread, a link is in my signature

Just bought this light for my fluval edge a few days ago. For those who have this light on a small tank such as mine could you share your lighting program? (on/off of each channel and max and min intensities of each channel).

I currently have a

frogspawn

2 zoa colonies

2 small acan colonies

blastomussa wellsi

and a small cyphastrea frag

thanks! I have only had the light for a few days but due to the tank being so shallow (2-3 inch sand bed for pair of high fin gobies and candy cane pistol) i have the lights set at 12PM blue on ramp up to 100% by 1230, white on at 4PM ramped up to 45 percent at 430, whites ramped down to off from 830-900 and blue ramped down to 12% from 1030-11 and than at 12% for two hours before off. Is this four hours of white enough? I was worried about bleaching with so a shallow tank and this light is really bright. any input or schedules are appreciated from others with small tanks.

thanks!
