gobie pairing & brutality.

hello everybody.... i'm scrolling down the fish forums here and see one on 'ethics', something i'm usually lacking when it comes to animal husbandry. this is a case in point.... if you're squeamish or a member of peta, you might wanna skip this one.

i've got a four gallon cylinders vase, specifically designed with a living dsb for a shrimp/goby pair.

i bought the pair in july. they were two from a trio at the lfs. i took the two that were together.

they immediately took to the shrimp that had set up tunnels in the new home. i previously housed the shrimp in various vases from one gallon to 2.6 gallons. this new four gallon home was a mansion. i even had tubing for it to utilize in its en devours. the gobies seem to pair off at first... then they started to take their own sides of the dt. the vase is only nine inches wide. they got along fine. up until.........

then i noticed at a later date that the last remaining goby at the lfs still hadn't been sold.

so i bought it and brought it home.

the newcomer fought for its right to live in the cramped quarters of the four gallon vase. they settled in.

everything was harmonious for a few weeks.....

the original pair turned on each other.

it was brutal. little fish brutal... it went on for days. they would drag each other into the tunnels and fight, equally. the newcomer hovered in the water column while the original pair attacked each other.

one started to get the edge and then it was over.

the loser transferred to the qt, but died twelve hours later.

i took lots of pics.

the new pair have taken to each other as a pair would. i can see the difference in the sexes now, and there has been lots of dancing and shaking, but not like the fighting dances i've seen .

So what you're saying is you introduced a female to a pair of males and took pictures while they fought over her?

Intentional or not I would have dug in there and pulled them all away from each other.

Wouldn't matter if anyone got burried alive my shrimp goby pair has gotten buried a few times in their tank and they always manage to dig their way to the surface.

this aquarium is a 9" diameter, 19 1/2" depth and is super fragile. what you are saying is total nonsense. i wouldn't let you do anything to this display..... id kill every fish before i disturbed this display and the sandbed in it. you are far too over emotional.

the intention is to create a perfect environment for a breeding pair of stonogobiops. the whole four gallons is plankton friendly. to accomodate the fry fro m the breeding pair. something i have since achieved.

the 'surviving pair are happy and producing fry every seven days.....

how many times have your fish bred in your tanks?

here's some pictures of the the resultant fry.

So many great examples of what NOT to do.

the resultant pair of gobies are breeding..... something you've achieved?

should i post you some pictures of the fry?

this is exactly how you breed fish.... are you still playing with clownfish?

is this serious??

producing baby fish is serious. have you done it?

You don't have to be Squeamish or a member of PETA to know that that was just downright stupid.

Congrats

once again, this is how you produce a breeding pair of fish...... nothing stupid about it. just the feeble minds that feel that way.

and actually, i introduced a male to a pair of females.....

So you are trying to force a pair of fish to breed by confining them to a space too small, and one kills the other. You then have the audacity to say that those who call this stupid are feeble minded? Wow, do you have any clue what you are doing? Have you put much thought into your "breeding" practices? It sounds like you are trying to justify this to yourself. Think what you want man, you are in the wrong on this one.

Sorry Gogo, but I'm with everyone else on this one. Although you did get a successful spawning, the way it was handled wasn't correct. I wouldn't have wasted time capturing pictures of my fish trying to kill each other - I'd have stuck my hand in there immediately and found a way to somehow separate them. And if that and all else failed and the fish tried to take chunks out of each other again, I'd smashed open that jar and saved all three of them in backup bins/QTs rather than watch them wrestle and post it up here for a giggle on NR. Even you must realize, this is incredibly foolish. Not trying to sound sharp here since I take risks with my tank as well, but there's just some lines which you shouldn't cross, IMHO.

Totally unnecessary and cruel ......we should do our best as civilized people to be kind to all living creatures

Agreed. This was a huge mistake, but thank you for sharing. This can be a good reference to share with some one who is thinking about doing something similar to ward them off the idea.

I do have to say that if you would have just stuck to a single goby/shrimp pair that I really like the concept of the 4 gallon cylider with DSB for viewing the burrows.

I am actually getting a 5g sphere. It is a piece of lab equipment and has a top you can stick your fist in. It has a friction fit top (ground fitting). I'm gonna drill the top and make a sphere tank. It has a cool cork base to hold it upright.

oh for crying out loud...

friday morning a flatbed truck pulls up to the loading dock, my receiver gets me over, i inspect the live writhing mass before me, crammed into a wet plywood box. the water that is sloshing around in that box is cold and clean. the glinting writhing mass gets my nod. the driver counts out forty eight. he bags them and the receiver carts them behind me, to a sink full of ice.

i put on my gloves, he dumps them in the sink.

it's nine thirty am. i get the pipe and knife.

three hours later... forty five members of the ladies club are asking for the dessert menu.

i sit down with my sous, to discuss the matter of letting the apprentice butcher the loin of angus, over a delicious squash stuffed roast trout.

previous to that i sacrificed one female stonogobiops, in the process of finding a breeding pair.... the only breeding pair that i can seem to find on the interwebs. there is little to no info on their breeding.

i thought i'd share the experience with you. this being part of the interweb and all.

the search for black ray gobies on this site is a failure.

there was an adventurous thread about a dude cramming a pair into a two gallon.... i gotta go back and subscribe to that dude.

but for what it's worth, i'm doing it.

i've got some fresh b.c. salmon coming in on wednesday... i got a guy who makes a wicked fish head soup.

i posted this comment for giggles.

i posted those pictures because they don't exist anywhere else on the internet.

you guys gotta getta grip with the 'it's much better in a container in my livingroom thanintheocean...psychosis. seriously... aquarists kill little fishes by the millions, each year.

ladies, as for the canadian comment.... this country is full of people like me... we're just in the places that you never go.

and at ripleys too.

i gotta go rip....

You can't really blame people... you didn't really explain anything at all in your 1st post. It literally looked like you were brawling fish for fun. It didn't look like it was a breeding project at all from your first post so what can you expect?

I am not sure why you wouldn't just remove one of the females but that's another story.

How far along have you gotten with the fry? You are trying to raise them to adults I assume?

What a jerk: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=837942 One search for "stonogobiops breeding" and that was the first hit.

I am surprised that this thread hasn't been locked so that it can drop off and go away. It began offensively and has come full circle. Obviously nothing positive will come of it.
