xiaoxiy
Can I get some NR help in IDing these gorgs? On a scale from 1 to "you're screwed, these are the hardest nps gorgs to keep alive", where am I at with the gorgs? The one on the left is white with pink/red polyps, and the one on the right is purple with white polyps. Link to comment
PiscesFish
Are you able to get closer pics of them both? Link to comment

Lynaea
The purple is probably photosynthetic, not sure on the other though the white one looks happier. If you just bought them they may just need some TLC. My gorgs eat almost anything I put in the tank that's small enough to catch and 'swallow'. Make sure they're in a decent flow area and blow them off occasionally to keep algae from growing on them. The purple one might regrow the tissue it's lost, keep an eye on it. Otherwise I would just feed them several times a week with cyclopeeze or a similar sized flake, pellet and/or frozen food. Mine get all of the above. Link to comment

Both had a short, and unfortunate encounter with falling on hammer corals (purple touched the hammer more), thus the lost tissue . They're both right next to the MP10. Hopefully that'll be adequate flow. I'll keep feeding them; I'm planning on feeding them cyclopeeze, brs reef chili, and the zeovit nano power pack. Fingers crossed! Link to comment
Eckozulu
If the purple has white polyps it's most likely nonphoto. I would cut off the dead branches before it spreads. Zeo coral snow works the best for me. I feed them every other day. Link to comment

Lets hope my feeding regimen of once-twice a day is enough. If not, meh.... Link to comment

If not, meh.... check out the azoox forums you may be able to get an ID. Those guys use crazy feeding systems like atos linked to kalk reactors full of phyto so the tank is broadcast fed every time it is topped up. You need crazzzzzy filtration to keep up with that. I think we should get some clarification on this, all of my purple gorgs have what I would call white polyps and are photosynthetic. Although I guess if I had to get super specific the polyps are more beige-ish than pristine white. I can't really tell the color from the pic, the shape does look like one I have read is harder to keep though. Link to comment
The Aquarist
Well, the white one with pink polyps looks just like this non-photo gorg on DD right now, so I'd say its really hard to keep. Not sure about the other. Link to comment

Not sure about the other. That looks almost identical to what I have! On the bright side, diver's den says to feed it several times a week instead of several times a day! On the downside, it's considered "expert" only. Link to comment

IMO alot of the "expert only" stuff is listed as such because it does have higher requirements to survive then some of the more basic versions. With ample research, proper equipment and good water quality they can generally be ok. Obviously being non-photo they will need to be fed a decent amount of small enough particles to survive, while maintaining good water quality and parameters. Impossible no, some skill and knowledge required, certainly It wouldn't hurt to feed a good mixed diet to your fish as well as some of the smaller liquid/ powder coral foods... they are still filter feeders and a quality fish diet will lead to quality poop which will help feed the gorgs as well Link to comment

I'm planning on breaking up my current large feeding into 3 smaller feedings a day, for 6 days a week. Monday: BRS Reef Chili + Cyclopeeze + Flakes Tuesday: Flakes + Coral Vit + Pellets Wednesday: BRS Reef Chili + Cyclopeeze + Flakes, along with Pohl's Extra and Sponge Power Thursday: BRS Reef Chili + Cyclopeeze + Flakes + Pellets Friday: Fasting, No Food Saturday: 80% WC, BRS Reef Chili + Cyclopeeze + Flakes, along with Pohl's Extra and Sponge Power Sunday: BRS Reef Chili + Cyclopeeze + Flakes, along with LPS amino acids Hopefully this feeding/dosing regimen will be sufficient to keep the gorgs alive. Looks good to me. I don't recall who it is but seems I have seen somewhere a powder/ small granual formula designed specifically for gorgs (maybe LRS???) as well maybe substitute a day or two of Reef Chili with that or there is another small powder from new life spectrum that seems to be great for filter feeders and sps (which would make me think things like gorgs would appreciate the size as well).... its called nutri/cel. You should be fine without anything else but never hurts to mix it up a little more either Link to comment
The Aquarist
Have you guys tried the fauna marin foods? A lot of NPS keepers seem to have success with them. They have a food designed especially for sea fans, and other non-photo stuff. Link to comment
