External Feeding in an Acan?

I fed roe, and instead of swallowing the food the acanthastrea decided to extend what look like digestive filaments. I think. Is that what happened? It held on to the food for hours.

Yep - if the particles are too big to completely envelop it'll extend it's digestive tentacles out. LPS much prefer to wrap their food up inside the polyp to prevent things like crabs and shrimp from stealing it, but they can digest it inside or out! Acan lords don't usually show this behavior as much as acan echinatas (which have nasty yellowish "tentacles" that are much bigger) since they can wrap up much bigger pieces of food. It is completely normal and something I typically see 2-3x a week when I target feed.

Super cool though to see a close up!

Great! I think the to polyp has the excuse of 'I'm a little busy trying to separate into two beings' (pretty sure I saw two tiny mouths in there), but I'm not sure about the rest of them. Oh, well; least it's an actual thing.

Thanks! Cannot wait until my tripod gets here.

Acan Lords don't grow by splitting polyps, but by creating entirely new polyps. If you look on the left right side of the picture, you can see two babies. There definitely isn't a second mouth on the lord unless it is a mutation - and even if there is, the poylp won't split in two.

Edited: Apparently I forgot the whole kindergarden class of "left" vs "right"...
