Hi everyone. I want to post on the livestock section but for some reason the start new post is shaded grey and says you cannot start new post. But I can on every other section. Any ideas why? Anyway I'm looking to purchase an sps birdsnest coral frag. If anyone is selling please PM me :) thanks.

Check the read before posting message link at the top of the forum. You have to have 15 posts before you can post in there. So looks like you need 4 more.

Try ebay.

Honestly, getting a frag ready to ship, plus shipping, is a lot more expensive than the actual frag. At least for me.

I have a few you could have for free if you came over and got them. To ship them, im looking at about $75 worth of time, and about $40 to ship them overnight.

^100%. shipping frags, especially one at a time, is not really worth it. Unless you're buying in bulk and can overnight them, which can really empty your pocket. For the few reasons that the expense of shipping is high/cost of time/and liability that frag maybe injured or DOA.

SPS you're definitely asking for trouble with shipping. Do you have a local fish store you frequent? Birdsnest are very commen frags, and even if you don't see them on display, many of the store have off-site farms and if you ask they're usually very accomodating and will get one in.

National forums are a terrible place to buy single frags. If you are buying a big pack and spending a couple hundred dollars, the shipping is worth it - but if you only want a couple frags you need to buy local.

Every single place I have lived has had a local forum - you should look for a local forum or at the very least a sub-forum for your area and post in there. Short of that, check your various LFS - birdsnest is incredibly common.

If you can't find a local reefer or LFS with birdsnest, wait until you have a bigger wish list then order from an online vendor like Unique Coral or Live Aquaria or similar to make the shipping worth it. Unique Coral has $19.99 shipping, so that is probably your best online bet, though tehy have limited birdsnest corals.

I've ordered at least a dozen acro frags online in at least 5 different orders, including more sensitive deepwaters and smooth skinned, and never lost a single one to shipping. If you buy from a reputable vendor that is selling healthy coral and properly shipping it, unless there is some huge delay, it'll arive alive. Yes, DOAs happen, but they happen from LFS too. If you use common sense and order more sensive SPS in decent weather from a good vendor, DOAs are almost nonexistant.

Js,

Birdsnest is fragile at best. And pointy, very pointy at worse.

Plastic bags, even triple bagged have a good chance of getting poked and leak out. I bought one online, all the points were broke off, was quad bagged, and had water in the third bag out. The points all grew back, some at gimpy angles though.

Tidal Gardens has a neat trick. They float them upside down with cell packing in urine sample containers. The average reefer is not going to have those.

Other SPS I agree, pretty tolerant. Dont dip your Hawkins Echinata in iodine, I did that twice without knowing they dont have a slime coat. Bad outcome.

Thanks for the replies. I'm located in El Paso TX. So there aren't many good quality LFS here, and they are pretty much overpriced. I guess they think they can BS people into thinking they are selling premium livestock. Finding local reefers in the hobby is even more rare in these forums. I purchased an ORA neon green birds nest frag years ago for 10.00 at a LFS they didn't even know what it was. It started to grow nicely in my tank so did the pink one I purchased. Very hardy SPS corals in my opinion. But I had to shut down the tank. Now that i'm back in the hobby I just can't seem to find them locally anywhere. And they want to charge me ridiculous prices to order them. So i'm pretty sad right now haha. Its my favorite coral.
