Smithjm5
Noticed them growing on a little rock in the front of the tank today they're really small. Sorry for the pic. it's the best I could get. Link to comment
TJ_Burton
Some sort of star polyp or perhaps anthelia. Link to comment
BulkRate
They're a little washed out by your lighting, but I'm gonna guess a small colony of clove polyps. poke test will answer the question for sure - tap one with "pokin' stick" and if it retracts all the way back into the rock quickly - aiptasia. If slow and you still have a stalk - some kind of clove polyp. Link to comment
GHill762
yeah, waving hand or xenia or anthelia or something similar in that family.. Link to comment
Smithjm5
Cool! Now I need to find my pokin stick... brb lol Link to comment
TJ_Burton
In all likelihood, it is anthelia or some type of xenid. Some reference photos of various anthelia: Macro shot of polyp Link to comment
Smithjm5
So I poked it a little and took a closer look, and it retracts into some kind of stalk. And since the photo is kind of washed out it's a purple-ish pink color with a white center. But it doesn't have little branches extending off it like the pictures above. I just wanted to know if I needed to worry about it. Link to comment
GHill762
as far as worrying, depends on your goals for the tank.. corals in this family tend to be quick growers, tanks can quickly be taken over by star polyps, xenia, cloves, etc.. it's not necessarily considered a "pest" like aiptasia though. but they don't spread quickly for everyone, my gsp has hardly grown in like 6 months and xenia melted away within a few weeks when I put it in my tank.. Well it's on a small loan rock in the front of the tank so I think i'll let it grow and see how it looks I was looking online and it kind of looks like pipe organs but the wrong color...What do ya'll think? http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=597+599+480&pcatid=480 Link to comment
GHill762
pipe organ has a stony skeleton, if they are soft it's not a pipe organ.. Link to comment
Smithjm5
gotcha, maybe a starburst polyp then... Link to comment
doppelganger
looks more like knopia polyps to me but it's kind of hard to tell. Either way, cool little find. Definitely doesn't look like anything bad. Would be neat to see them grow out. Link to comment
amphipod
Keep it a little space from your other polyps, and let it grow, its really pretty Link to comment
