The coral compulsion par 38 has an option to change your led combos and one is 2 cool blue, 2 neutral white and 1 cool white. I wanted to know if it would support sps like birdsnest and monti's. Sorry if I am not being clear I dont really know alot about reef leds. 2 cool blue (not royal), 2 neutrals, and 1 cool white isn't a good mix mainly because you're getting your blue from the wrong wavelength. If you're looking to do this on a budget look into getting a reefbreeders value fixture. A single PAR 38 is going to be extremely focused and you'll get some serious shadows near the end. If you're thinking about SPS, you don't want to even consider skimping on the light. Link to comment
doppelganger Posted July 23, 2014 Share Posted July 23, 2014 It really sounds like you need to figure out what color temperature you like the best and then go from there. Any par38 with the correct wattage of led's would be enough to grow sps in a 10G. Keep in mind, par38's shine light in a cone. Meaning you'll have a spotlight with only bulb. It'll be brighter in the center and the light will fall off as you get toward the edge of the tank. If you get wider optics, you'll be able to get more spread (but a little weaker) Likewise if you get tighter optics, the spread will be concentrated more to the middle (and stronger). On a 10G, go with something with wider optics or else you'll end up bleaching everything because it'll be too strong. As for the color temperature, it's really personal preference. 20K is very blue with leds. I found a thread for you here that has a few comparisons. I would highly recommend googling Par38 20K, Par38 16K... etc. It gives you an idea of what temperature you'll want. The image you asked above is probably a 16K range. The color of the bulb is determined by what leds they use. In your example above (2 cool blue, 2 neutral white and 1 cool white) has 3 whites in it which probably means it'll be more whiter. I'm not an expert on leds so you'll have to ask someone about it. When in doubt, as the retailer what that spectrum looks like and ask for some pics. If you're really picky on color temp then you're better off doing a DIY or getting a fixture where you can dim the blues and whites separately to get the exact color you want. Link to comment

You may also want to consider: http://reefbreeders.com/shop/nano-lite/ Better coverage on a 10g. I had a par38 on a 12g cube and still had shadowing which is a lot shorter than a standard 10g. You can make it work though... coral compulsion recommends two par 30's: http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/342074-24w-par38-10g/ Otherwise make sure to buy 120 optics and switch them because that bulb you linked comes with 90 degrees. My par38 can barley cover a 12 inch cube with 90 degree optics. I still get some shadowing. Link to comment

Hopefully their pictures match what you'll actually see. It's dimmable which is good for you too. Tamb is right. You might want wider optics. Most recommend 2 bulbs for a 10 gallon. You'll have to keep your rock scape in mind. You'll most likely have to scape it with more rocks in the center and sps on the top of that. Low light coral closer to the edge of the tank.
