My Future Build 30-40g AIO

Well, the SW bug has bit me hard and I am planning for my future build. I wanted to start this thread to get feedback from everyone on what I am looking at for this build.

So first I am looking into a either a 30-40g AIO, possibly Nuvo. Space is limited or I would be going bigger lol. The reason I chose the AIO is everything is built in and adding skimmer, reactor etc. will be easier.

The first and main thing I am looking at is lighting. I was looking at a couple different one's and would like to get feedback on them....

First is this one, I like the programmable ability in it....

Then there is this one....

Also wanting to be able to mount them using a arm, rack etc. Since I rent my home can't put holes in the ceiling

20-30 more pounds of rock...will be using the current rock in my nano to make up for the rest.

  • Sand - How much would be needed for about a 1 1/2" to 2" sand bed?
  • How many fish would fit comfortably in a 30-40g?
  • Heater - 100w or 150w?
  • Would 2 Hydro 240's be enough since the AIO's have dual return heads?

Okies, these are my main questions right now. Looking forward to any and all feedback/assistance.

For the price I think that you could get much better lighting - Used Radion Gen 2, Kessil's, AI Hydra/Vega - these would be maybe $40-80 more
Not 100% sure on these but I can't imagine them being the greatest but probably not the worst either.

  • Sand - How much would be needed for about a 1 1/2" to 2" sand bed? - Depends on the size tank you go with.
  • How many fish would fit comfortably in a 30-40g? - Depends on the fish but I would stick to smaller fish - clowns/gobies/some wrasse/anthias
  • Heater - 100w or 150w? - 100 if 30g and 150 if 40g but I would go with 150w on either......I would look into a controller for the tank - Apex Jr./Lite/Full is what I would use to give you a fail safe and controllability
  • Would 2 Hydro 240's be enough since the AIO's have dual return heads?
  • I would throw a MP10 in the tank and be done with it, very little foot print in the tank and man can they move water.....Tunze 6015/25 and WP10 would also work, personally I don't like the look of the hydros and the suction cup magnets are not the greatest.
Okies, these are my main questions right now. Looking forward to any and all feedback/assistance.
Im sure you will get a lot of different opinions on what to use and why, they good thing is that is a guideline of how to do it but multiple choices are available to get the job done ;)
If the SW bug recently bit you, prepare to have your wallet feel a little lighter very quickly ;)
Good luck and be patience, a lot of info and cool peeps on here to help out

Thank you cpR for the reply :). I have been looking at several lights and there are just so many to choose from. Will take a look at your suggestions and see what I can find there.

Yeah, the bug bit be big time and my wallet is already feeling it with this 10g :D . But the relaxation and enjoyment from it is well worth the cost. My wife is even starting to get into it and wants me to put the tank in the living room :D She said SW tanks are meant for display....SCORE! Bigger build should be easier now lol.

Ok, so i have decided on the lights i wanted and went ahead and purchased them. I got the Ocean Revive Aquatic T247's. Checked out the specs and also watched some video's and demo's and really like them. They have been tested on SPS, LPS and softies with great results.

Now, question lol. I can't hang this from the ceiling since I am renting my home. Does anyone know anywhere I can find a bracket etc. to mount it on that I could probably place behind the tank?

Now that I got just about everything I need for my new build, except for the tank and rock, I was wanting to see if I could input from others on something.

When I go to set up this new tank I want to kind of have a theme to it. Something like the lost city or tree of life....

Was hoping everyone may be able to offer suggestions or opinions on what can be used beside rick and sand to maybe bring this about?

Been thinking, I am still leaning to getting the AIO tank but was also looking at alternatives to keep my options open.

So here was my thinking, if I went with a regular tank, 40g, and just purchased the things I need (i.e. filter HOB Skimmer, HOB Reactor etc.) and no sump....what would be the best option for filtration? HOB, Canister, other?

Any suggestions would be a big help :)
