tlombardo
In a system like a 3 gallon with a canister filter is there any way to use an ato without having a float switch and top off tube in the display? I don't know much about canister filters so I wasn't sure if this is something that can be done. Obviously a sump would make this easy but a sump seems silly on a pico. Thanks! Tony Link to comment

Tony You can use a small gravity fed system made from a hamster bottle, but that is still going to take up space. You can also use a pressure-tube system like an Avast or Spectrapure ATO. I know Hydor has the new SmartFill that is smaller, but I don't know if that'll fit on your system. There are tons of different ATO designs that don't use float switches - check them all out and see wht works best on your system. A canister filter is a closed loop system so you can't put an ATO on that. Link to comment
thadscottmoore
put a sump on that bad boy to hide all the behind the scenes devices. Link to comment
tlombardo
the only thing I would need a sump for is the float switch. I wouldn't have a skimmer and can put any media in a canister filter. I would sump it but it seems like it will be more expensive and more effort since I know nothing about drilling tanks/plumbing a sump. But My job necessitates auto top off so I just wanted to explore opportunities. Tony Link to comment
fallenlordz
sump all the way get a cheap $10 - 10 gallon tank (more options to do stuff) Link to comment
tlombardo
Well the emphasis with this would be keeping things simple and not taking up much space. If I was doing a bigger system I would definitely do a sump as they offer so much functionality but right now the only thing I need from a sump is a spot for my ato gear. Link to comment
