Clownfish Pair Question?

Will a bonded pair of clownfish get a long better if there is another fish in the tank with them? Or does it make no difference if they are the only fish in the tank? I had a pair a while back and they started fighting so I took one into the LFS and the owner told me it was because there were no other fish in the tank, wasn't sure if he was full of it or if there is some truth to it. Thanks for any feedback!

I mean, if one of your clownfish was just a jerk, then maybe as opposed to getting along with the other clownfish and picking on another fish, it decided to pick on its partner because there were no other fish. Other than that... I don't really see that as being a valid reason. It's probably just your individual clownfish that is a jerk in regards to its personality. I've got a pair in my tank with a yellow watchman goby and they get along just fine and don't bother the goby...

Were they juveniles? If so they will to that to figure out who will become the female! I have had mine since Jan, one is now the female and growing larger than the other, they get along great now that they have decided who is who. The lfs theory makes no sense!

I couldn't agree more with that assessment and has generally been the experience I have had with Maroon and Blue Striped Clownfish in the past when pairing Juveniles up to get a pair.
