Background

This past June, I upgraded from a 20 long to a 40 breeder, I figured it'd be the last upgrade I'd do for a while, however a few things have came up and it's time for a change! The first thing, is that I'm probably the worst wood worker ever and my metal stand has stood unskinned for much too long after multiple tries to get solid cuts. Secondly, I'll be moving out of this apartment in August into a much smaller place, and a peninsula style tank sticking 3' out of the wall is a tad bit obtrusive to our new home. The third is I wanted to have a clean setup, and ADA's tend to lead themselves to that when well planned. No more unfinished wood work and DIY sump, this time I'll be putting the money in initially rather than doing several upgrades to get what I want. Here's a quick video of my old tanks:

When I decided to upgrade, I was inspired by:

teamschreiba's ADA 60-F

daletu's ADA 60-F

Equipment

  • Vortech MP40
  • 2x Aqua Illumination Hydra
  • 2x 48'' AI EXT Rail system with 6'' horizontal rails
  • Apex Lite with DC4
  • Sicce Syncra 1.0
  • Glass Holes Nano Overflow Kit "con dientes"
  • Glass Holes 1/2'' return kit
  • Proflex Model 1 Sump
  • SCA-65 Skimmer *
  • ATO (undecided as of yet)
  • Ikea Besta unit with 15'' shelf extension
  • Fishneedit 75W Metal Halide with 20k Bulb (soon to be replaced by Kessil A150

Livestock

  • 2x False Percula (1x Midnight, 1x Platinum)
  • Female Black Ice Clownfish
  • Sherman Rose Anemone x2
  • Varios Zoas & Palys

Plans

I'll be purchasing the tank and stand with this weeks paycheck if everything goes to plan, if not, next weeks check will go towards that. From there, I will purchase the skimmer and return pump and then following that, the return and overflow kits. The last purchase will be the sump, light rails, and apex unit.

I hope to have this tank wet by mid January! This build will be slow, but I promise in the next few weeks to start pouring in those updates :)

On the equipment note, I know it sounds like overkill, but I've seen a few people use 2x mp10's on a tank this size, I'll be running my mp40 at around 1-3 dots and the hydras at a very low percentage. After owning hydras for a long time, I feel as one won't give me the adequate spread without color temp differences from the middle of the tank to the edges.

I like the platinum clown choice, my favorite type of clowns.

Thanks bro! He's quite the fish!

Bad ass light btw dude, haven't gotten to do much writing lately but I've been stalking your thread and that BML fixture is top shelf :)

Oh, stalking my thread without posting a comment on it?!?! That's fine, thanks ahah.

Yeah when I started this hobby, I thought platinums were the best, then I fallen more for picassos/onyx/snowflakes/frostbites, then I went back to the original...the platinum craze. Oh and I like black snowflakes now as well but not orange snowflakes.

Lol....

Yeah dude, your clown is quite the looker!

Thanks. Oh yeah, but if I did see a platinum clown next to it for sale at the same price, I would've went with the platinum. Just saying lol.

Oh yeah, so why not 2 mp10s instead of a mp40? I think it would work better to have one mp10 on each side (right or left) instead of just one mp40 doing all the work? Mmm I'm not so sure but that's what I've thought. Going to get a mp10 soon...lol.

I've considered the idea of that, but don't really want to shell out the cash for 2x mp10w's and most people usually only are trading one at a time, at least in my area lol. If I do find some, I'll probably try and workout the trade, but having the 40 also makes it easy for future upgrades lol

You should just get one Hydra 52 instead of 2x Hydra. Also, MP10 is already overkill for 60F, I have to turn it down to 3-4 for not making water spill out of tank and not disturb the sand bed. I vote for 2x MP10 instead of one MP40 as well. ;)

If they make the upgrade kit available soon (they said they would) I may do that, but I kinda like the multiple fixtures for more dynamic cloud cover and sweeping sunrise etc.., plus I already got em so no monies I need to spend on those! Also, for whatever reason, I don't really like the look of the Hydra 52, it looks kinda silly and the first time I saw it, I thought it was a gag photoshop image, but you never know :)

Mp40....such an overkill lolol. Now that Dale mentioned it.

Yeah, hydra52(1 wire) sounds better than two hydras(more wires....).

Lol yeah, wire managmement will be key, I want to have the Illu seal of approval ;).

As for the mp40, Ecotech actually reccomends running it at about 3g's per hour flow rate with the mp40, with that rate, that's a pretty high mark on the mp10, as some ADA 60F's run theres around 60%, I figure I can keep my 40 at 1-3 dots and it may be fine, if not, I'm sure a local reefer would be more than happy to do a swap!

I plan to move my huge sherman into this tank, so I'm pretty excited for how that'll go.

Updates:

I got the stand last friday, and man, that thing is AWESOME! I got two sets of doors for it, the clean slate door and the one with the square indentions, I think I like the square one a bit more but I'll have the other one on hand in case I decide to swap em out later. I did notice while assembling the stand, was that it was too unsturdy without the MDF backing on the lower cabinet, so I plan to gut a rectangle out of it and put this in there for moisture removal. One fan going in, one fan going out:

I'll also be using the top cabinet with shelves to mount my American DJ DC8.

Here's my schedule of things to buy and when I'll be buying: (each line is a Friday starting with this Friday)

Tank + DJ Strip= 180$

Fan Kit + Sicce 1.0 + Glass Holes stuffs= 200$

ATO + Pump 75$

Apex 200$

Light rails: 180$

Rock + Sand = 100$

My Fiance is buying me a sump and skimmer as a late anniversary gift :D

Dale, how far off the water line do you run your mp to reduce sucking from the surface?

Nice thinking!

I can't eliminate the water turbulence at all without creating sand storm. I have to place it higher to not disturb sand bed. I had it set to level 3 and placed it 1" below waterline. Level 4 will create turbulence. I think you should be able to eliminate the turbulence if you place it 2 inch below surface at setting of 4-5.

I ended up buying a Pico MP10 Shield to eliminate the turbulence but after several days of using it, I noticed a drawback. Our tank is so small and shallow, so I have to place my MP10 at back corner, the shield block the top portion of MP10, so only left a small portion of area for MP10 to suck in water, and that area creates extreme water movement, it's strong enough that actually against the output water, which ended up canceling output water current. I noticed this by looking at my Raspberry Lemonade Acro's long tentacles movement. No matter how high I turn the knob up, my Raspberry Lemonade's long tentacles don't move much, it stayed almost stand still. Not sure if you can understand what I mean but I will try to draw a graph then you will be able to understand. If you can't figured out how to eliminate turbulence and have to use a shield, then my suggestion is to not put the MP10 to the corner, you have to let MP10 to have enough space around it to suck in water by placing it in the middle.

This is what I mean... the purple arrows is where the water stand almost still due to our tank been too shallow and only have limited area for MP10 to suck water in, so the returning current is very very strong at bottom.

Lolol I see. So you're using dale's way of hiding the wires as well eh? Lolol

Kinda.. I don't want to drill into the wall so everything will be hidden in or on the stand!

Thanks for the great drawing!

Yeah, that does seem like a problem, which MP10 shield did you get? I know bad fish reef systems makes one but I've heard it takes a while to get anything from them.. do you think BB may be the answer? Or do you think that the addition of an overlow/ return would fix this in my case?

I got a Pico MP10 Shield. I turned the shield 45 degrees toward back glass side but not too much to let turbulence to appear, so it creates more open area for MP10 to suck in water. It improves the current a little but still not ideal. I will still get a MP10 though, just because it has many good features. You can probably play around your rocks to break the current at bottom so it won't be too strong to against the top current, with my way of rocks placement, it's just not possible to get it works out right.

Or you can place your MP10/40 in the middle instead of corner like mine, so you have 180 degrees of open space for MP10 to suck in water, then you won't have strong stream of water coming in to the MP10/40 like mine.

Yeah, I'm thinking more towards the middle but I may end up moving it. The besta stand is a really nice stand, and it matches my existing furniture, thanks for all your help!

No problem! Yea it works perfectly with 60F tank! Did you get the glossy door too? I like the glossy finish better than the normal leminate kind. It's easier to clean too.

Mhmmm, I'm not sure what the other door is, but this one is the "Vassabo door"

I think it's probably just the same texture as the other parts of the shelf!

Also, I feel as if the lips of the top and bottom units may be wide enough for the AI mount to get screwed into, but I'll confirm this when I order it. Worst case scenario I can cut a board and use it as a backer plate.

I was also pleasently suprised with the quality of the door hinges itself, I was half expecting some janky hardware but it looks pretty solid!

I see. You got the black/brown color with indentation in the middle.

I will suggest you cut a board because even if the lip is thick enough, it is not solid wood so it's not very strong. If you accidentally pull or push the extension holding bracket, you may break the cabinet.

Haha... some of IKEA are very crappy but there are some good ones too. :)

True true, I'll get some wood, spray paint it dark brown and use it as a backer plate! Good thinking bro!

Hey what are those plastic clips that break in half for? Each one came with two, is it a template for the wall screw hole?

Yep! That white plastic clips are brackets for wall mounting. You won't need to install them on the unit unless you want to mount the unit on the wall.

Just bought the tank on AFA!! Hopefully it's in stock, when I called yesterday he said it was pretty lowly stocked, I had to use my courtesy pay on my debit card but it was totally worth it if it goes through.

Btw, Dale, I shot a video yesterday of my MP40 right on the water's surface while I was doing a water change, no sucking at all, so I think it may work fine in the shallow tank, especially if I can keep it low enough to not disturb the sand, later tonight after work I'll see if I can upload it, I was pretty suprised how efficient that top section was at reducing sucking.
