Topshelf14
hey Jay - so i have this similar 16gal setup, and just havent been growing anything. Currently have, frogspawn, pulsing Xenia, a plate coarl, and star polyps. Clown fish, Coral beauty, dottyback, and watchman goby. My issue is nothing is growing. what do you do for upkeep?? like to top-off, do you use regual pure water, or ready-made salt water?? then after that, i saw you do weekly changes of 3 gallons?? I have definitely NOT been doing water changes of that much, that frequently... also, are you supplimenting? i just do a cap per week of Kent's essential elements. any help would be great man!! Topshelf, let me help you out. You don't top off with saltwater, you top off with RODI water because your only replacing the water lost due to evaporation. Additionally, I wouldn't add anything your not testing for so let me ask you... Are you using RODI water? What are your levels: Alk, Ca, Mg? Do you have any algae issues? That's a lot of bioload - 4 fish considering your tank is only 16 gallons. I also feel your tank is not large enough to support a coral beauty and even if it was they often become coral nippers. Water changes are to replace lost elements as well as remove excess nutrients. Weekly water changes are best however you may be able to sustain without. What do you have lighting your tank? Good luck Link to comment
Topshelf14
Hey Matt. Yea I use RO water for sure for topping off. I think bc i do that so often, i have neglected doing weekly water changes. I did like 1 gallon in the last 2 weeks - clearly not enough. No algea issues at all, almost seems like im TOO clean somtimes. I do see some jelly coming off some coral tho occaisionally. and to be honest, i havent once tested my CA, alkalinity etc.... only test salinity... brutal.. Yeah i know the 4 fish is a stretch - a friend gave me the coral beauty bc like u said he was nipping the hard coral he had. I havent had one issue with him yet, im staying away from those stoney coral they nip at. your right tho - long haul, he definitely wont thrive like he should. Add in a sally crab, and emerald, anenomie crab, cleaner shrimp and 5 hermits lol. So yeah, im maxed out there! I have lots (probly 20LBs live rock) of hiding i feel like for them. as far as lighting, i use the 14000 LED's sold with the innovative marine setup... i think they are good as ive seen growth... but then like i mentioned... it just stops... and that caused my concern bc i KNOW frogspawn/pulsing Xenia is sposed to grow like crazy!! and thats for sure not happeneing.... Im also adding today another Hydor pump for circulation, the 240GPH model to boost flow.... seems like my issue is clearly water changes - rather then being content with my topping off, i need to be pulling out a good 3 gallons a week seems like the consesus. Thanks a TON for your help Matt - Link to comment

Thanks a TON for your help Matt - I certainly think you need to beef up water changes. For starters, water changes get rid of waste and excess nutrients in the tank. Additionally, it replenishes minerals. It's very likely that since you are not preforming water changes and dosing and not testing that your parameters are off. You need to test for Alk, Ca, & Mg to see where these crucial levels are at. Link to comment
