Background

Hello Nano-Reef.com! Its been almost 2 years of not having a reef system and I have gotten the bug again. I am starting a new system using everything I learned from my last reefing experience and doing many things differently as well...

Building the Stand!

I started building this morning. Its not super fancy but will do the job. I still need to finish painting, cut wood for the doors, cut holes for the display's overflow plumbing and for random cords and such.

I will also be retrofitting an old living room lamp to the back center of the stand. The pole has 3 flexible fixtures which I will use for Evil66 Par38 LEDS. Starting off with "1" 20K bulb to get a feel for the color I want for the other 2 bulbs.

Heres the pics!! Please comment and enjoy!

How are you attaching the horizontal boards to the Vertical boards? Or is all just tacked together with the plywood.
75 gallon SPS, 2 - 29 gallon mixed reef, 2 - 20 gallon Frag tanks, 48X36X12 prop tank, 150 gallon FW community, 50 gallon Malawi cichlid tank, and too many to list 40+ more tanks.

Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

Used mostly 3" inch screws, Most of the 2x4 wered screwed directly together. The top ply has 2-3 screws per 2x4 going down verticle into them. I was able to stand on the top of it without the bottom base and framework. Crazy solid

5 - 2x4
2 - 3/8 plywood sheets
1 - Box of 3" screws
2 - Bling knobs
4 - Hinges for doors
Barely any scrap left over.

TANKS A LOT XTREME MARINE

These tanks are made by "Visio" and I picked them up at Xtreme Marine located in Ventura, California. I like this shop a lot, I drove 100miles back to my hometown to pick them up.

I am super happy with how they are constructed. They are built well and have very thick silicone seals. Dimensions 30.5x12.5x13

The overflow box has gnarly teeth to skim the surface of the water removing oily build up. It is also reinforced with glass panals.

Nice looking tank, I've decided I want a drilled tank when I upgrade.

Glad I could get you inspired!

This is my first delve into a drilled tank.

I was aiming at having ultimate flexibility and control with running my system. We shall see in the next few weeks.

I have a sump on my 75 but it has an overflow box, I just love the clean look.

Also, noticed your final equipment listed  that's usually what I go for too.

Now get this stuff together so we can watch a new tank take shape!

I positioned everything in place to get an idea of how it would look in my room. I still need to install the doors, cut a hole for the return hose, and install my light fixture to the back.

Aight son, aight... here they are.

Only thing I bought at Home Depot today was a 4 pack of those U brackets... $2.50

I attached the light fixture to the back of the stand. Wasn't too hard, I had some good friends to help out.

I also cut the overflow area out a bit better and cleaner. It was difficult to turn the bulkhead from inside the stand.

Tomorrow, I will try to get the sump taped off for glass baffles. I am also awaiting an order for a Hydor Seltz L40 return pump, 5 Glass Baffles and some livesand.

I got a call today from the local glass shop. They said the glass I ordered were ready for pickup. So I boned out on my lunch break and swooped them up.

I got 5 panals, they measure 9.5"x11.75"

They have smoothed edges so I wont cut my strong but sensitive hands :scarry:

You, Sir, and other DIYers are getting me thinking more and more about a DIY project of my own!

That kind of light fixture would be perfect for my pair of picos - I haven't spotted anything like it so far here in Aus.

Keep the updates coming!

Thanks for the replies all. And JoelRHale I had no idea!! I just clicked it and saw where it went... omg lol omgomgomg So I fixed it. But yeah, Damn Gina!!!

BAD NEWS

Sump Baffles were to cut too long (MY FAULT)... So the height is fine but the length is not. They would be at an angle if I installed them.

So im gonna call the glass shop tomorrow and see if they can either cut some off or shave them down. If not, then they will be installed with a mad gangster lean :bling:

Yet more proof that problems WILL happen when starting a new reef system. This hobby is a continuous learning experience full of trials and errors that will inevitably arise when you least expect it.

Ever since I got home and realized I "gone and %@&$*# up" on my glass baffle measurements I was like this omgomgomg

I got a hold of the glass shop and they said to bring them in today and they would cut some off.

So I am very relieved. Tonight I will be working on my return plumbing.
